Grade 5: Fiona Berry, Richard Illingworth, Jessica Doedens, Karen Whalley, Eltham Christian School, March 1983 The Stokes family settled in this area of Eltham in the 1940s and were associated with the Eltham Christian Church. In the 1970s this church had met in temporary premises in Eltham. Lots of the original 1920s subdivision remained south of Nyora Road and a number of these lots were utilized for the Eltham Christian School, which was established by the Eltham Christian Church in 1981. The school operated on this site until 2000. The premises were owned by the Nillumbik Community Church who were in operation till November 2010 when the Eltham Baptist Church commenced a lease arrangement until the site was purchased by them in April 2012. The building is constructed of brick and timber with a balcony on two sides that looks over an expanse of grass. A photo of a former junior legatee participating in a boys basketball class. Ron Barassi was a successful AFL footballer at the time. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Barassi Snr was killed at Tobruk in World War II. He has participated in many Legacy events over many years. This was an early record of his involvement at a young age. One of the boys was Ian Paltridge on the far left (1955/56?) - from a note added to the photo at some stage. John Robert Hoskins was a Councillor with the City of Bendigo from1888 - 1902 and Mayor from 1901 - 1902. Hoskins' interests in the region included the mining company Hoskins & Co, which distinguished itself on the late Derwent Reef United Company's leased ground in 1868 by achieving a yield of over an ounce to the ton. In the late 1870s John R. Hoskins formed a estate agency in partnership with Frederick Illingworth. He was also manager of the New Nil Desperandum, formed to work the shaft of the old Raywood mine, from 1906 to 1908. Event program for the Mayoral Dinner July 25, 1902. A newspaper article promoting Legacy Week in The Age on 9 September 1960. The caption of the photo says 'Junior Legatee Jim Illingworth wore an appealing smile as he proudly displayed a Legacy Appeal poster at Legacy House yesterday. The target of today's appeal is £30,000.' He could be the same junior legatee that posed for an image of a Legacy Boy that was printed as a brochure in 1960 with the slogan 'The Legacy Boy, worthy son of a worthy father.' The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings.
