The tea tree made squeegee (being made from nature's anti bacterial material) was an excellent hygienic implement to use. ...This "home made" squeegee was manufactured in the mid to late 1900's by an ingenuous dairyman as a solution to the removal of cow "pats" from the concrete floors of his "milking" sheds. The tea tree made squeegee (being made from nature's anti bacterial material) was an excellent hygienic implement to use. This "home made" wooden squeegee is very significant to the Kiewa Valley and its surrounding regions because it highlights the natural ingenuity found in the pioneer farmer, grazier and other rural folk. It demonstrates the "mother of invention and adaptation" is very strong in rural areas where "off the shelf" products were a rare quantity. Part of the natural psyche of the rural Australian inhabitants is the ability to produce inventions that overcome physical restrictive conditions, "the man/woman of all trades" is an apt description of the pioneers of yesteryear and of those to come. The squeegee handle is a long branch made from a tea tree, inserted into the upper flat side of a slab of tea tree wood which is flat on one side and curved on the other, the natural curve of the tree trunk. This squeegee was used on dairies for removing cow manure.timber, dairy, farm, rural, implement -

... shed for the Mother Country, so too would British Blood be in the defence of Australia. But in 1939 Australia lay wide open to attack, her defences practically non-existent, and she was reluctant to commit her meagre forces overseas. Her objections were overcome, however, by an unequivocal British promise to protect her from a Japanese attack, so she sent troops and ships to the northern hemisphere, leaving Singapore naval base as the cornerstone of her own defence policy. Britain's promise to defend Australia was made with little concern for the possibility of its ever being implemented ...The ignominious fall of Singapore to the Japanese in February 1942 marked the climax of the greatese crisis in Anglo-Australian relations - Britain's inexcusable betrayal of Australia in time of war. Until World War II, Australia had always rushed to the Imperial colours, confident that just as Australian blood was shed for the Mother Country, so too would British Blood be in the defence of Australia. Britain's promise to defend Australia was made with little concern for the possibility of its ever being implemented and, certainly, in 1939 a direct threat to Australia looked unlikely. During 1940 and 1941, however, the threat from Japan increased, while Britain's ability to counter it weakened. Yet the British government resisted calls to strengthen the Far Eastern Defence, continually reassuring Australia that the Japanese threat would not materialize and that, even if it did, Britain could still contain it. Then the inconceivable happened: in December 1941 the Japanese decimated the US fleet at Pearl Harbour and in early 1942 took Singapore, leaving Australia suddenly in immediate peril. But the oft-repeated promise to defend the Dominion came to nought. And, at the most crucial time in Australia's history, Churchill tried to prevent substantial American forces from being sent to the pacific, and even attempted to delay the repatriation of Australian troops needed for defence. Thus Britain deliberately left Australia at the mercy of Japan, using her to divert and delay the Japanese thrust westwards towards India and the Middle East...[inside front and back cover]. This compelling and controversial book reveals how in 1942 Churchill, in an attempt to delay an attack on India, left Australia at the mercy of the Japanese by trying to prevent American forces being sent to the Pacific. Drawing on a wealth of sources, including many previously unavailable to historians, David Day exposes a saga of empty promises and asks serious questions about the past and future relationship between Britain and Australia. McKay’s Advertising Signs H.V. McKay’s advertising signs were more than just promotional tools—they were visual emblems of industrial pride and rural transformation. His company, famous for the Sunshine Harvester, used signage to reinforce the brand’s identity across Australia and beyond. Characteristics of H.V. McKay Advertising Signs • Brand Name “Sunshine”: This was McKay’s flagship brand, stamped on everything from machinery to buildings. The name itself evoked optimism, productivity, and Australian ingenuity. • Bold Typography: Many signs featured large, serif lettering with high contrast, often in red, yellow, or black colors associated with vitality and visibility in rural landscapes. • Imagery of Machinery: Some signs depicted the Sunshine Harvester or other agricultural implements, emphasizing innovation and reliability. • Materials: Signs were typically made of enamel, tin, or painted wood. Enamel signs were especially durable and popular for outdoor use. • Placement: Signs appeared on factory walls, railway sidings, rural supply stores, and even on the sides of barns and sheds across farming regions. Sunshine’s Historical Context • The H.V. McKay Pty Ltd, commonly referred to as the Sunshine Harvester Works, in Braybrook Junction (later renamed Sunshine) was located on this site. The factory became a hub of local industrial activity, and signage played a key role in branding the town itself. • By the 1920s, the H.V. McKay Harvester Factory had become the largest manufacturing enterprise in the Southern Hemisphere. • The Sunshine Harvester Works employed thousands of people from both Sunshine and the surrounding suburbs. • In 1930, the company merged with the Australian arm of the Canadian manufacturer Massey Harris, forming H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. • In 1953, Massey-Harris merges with Harry Ferguson Ltd, forming Massey-Harris-Ferguson Ltd and in 1958 renamed to Massey Ferguson Ltd • The Massey Ferguson Factory closed in the 1980’s and the demolition of the site started in 1988. • The site today is the home of the Sunshine Market Place, Brimbank Council Offices, Visy Cares Hub, Sunshine Police Station, Sunshine Magistrates' Court and a number of other shops and offices. • The only building remaining of the original factory is the Bulk Store, now the Visy Cares Hub. The station stayed open until 1954, but judging by context such as the clothing of the people on the platform, this image was likely taken earlier. While it's possible this is a crowd gathered for the opening of the station, it is difficulty to prove either way and could also just be a crowd of passengers for the normal operation of the line. This image captures a vital element of Emerald's historical development - the railway. This item is a modern coy of an older black and white photograph. The photo captures a steam train entering a railway station from the left of the frame, greeted by a crowd of people standing on the station platform to the right. The train is partially obscured by a shed on the photographer's side of the tracks, likely with implements for train maintenance. Several other buildings are visible behind the station, with trees further in the distance.Obverse, Caption: "Railway Station, Emerald"railway, emerald
