Photograph, J E Barnes, Herbert J. Henty, Mayor [of Kew] 1868-9, 1906
Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames. This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of mayors and town clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series.Framed portrait of Cr. Herbert J. Henty, Mayor of Kew 1868-9. The mounting and framing of the photograph follows a typical layout or style in that each is framed in dark wood, glazed, and laid down on an inscribed board. The inscription identifies the name of the mayor and the year/s that he/she served.Herbert J. Henty, Mayor [of Kew] 1868-9mayor of kew, cr. herbert j henty, kew (vic.) — municipal collection -

Letter - Correspondence, Henry J. Hall, Henry J. Hall to Ballarat School of Mines, 19/03/1898
Henry J. Hall was an teacher Freehand Drawing and Model Drawing at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1889 he reported to the Ballarat School of Mines Council that this class was never established for the cultivation of Art (as generally understood) or the making of pictures but with an idea of assisting artisans - of both sexes - and persons connected with mechanical industries, in acquiring lightness of hand, and facility in the use of a black-lead pencil so as to be able to place legibly and intelligibly upon a sheet. For many years Henry Hall advertised private tuition in Drawing, Painting and Perspective, at 'Ferndale', 25 Eyre Street. Handwritten letter on paper with the address 'Ferndale, 25 Eyre Street, Ballarat' printed at the top. The handwritten letter is from Henry J. Hall to Andrew Anderson, President of the Ballarat School of Mines. Handwritten in ink "March 19th 98 Andrew Anderson Esq President School of Mines Dear Sir I am informed by the registrar of the School of Miens that you are desirous of despensing [sic] with the services of Drawing Instructor at that Institution. The reason assigned being dis-satisfaction expressed by the inspector regarding "the quantity and quality of the freehand work done during the year. Before any definite action is taken, might I ask in justice to myself and the students whose work is thus maligned, that I be allowed a personal interview with Mr Monkhouse in order to ascertain the grounds of his complaint, and afford me an opportunity of vindicating my position. I have the honor to remain, respectfully yours Henry J. Hall." Written and circled in red ink "168" ballarat school of mines, henry j. hall, henry hall, andrew anderson, drawing, art -

Book - Reference, William J Goudie, D. Sc., Professor (William john Goudie), Steam Turbines, 1922
This textbook was written for engineering students by Scottish Professor, William J Goudie, D. Sc., (1868-1945). He was a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, James Watt Chair of Mechanical Engineering, University of Glasgow, and Professor of "The Theory and practice of Heat Engines" in the University of Glasgow. He wrote several papers and books on the topics of mechanical speed and power. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co., was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The first practical steam turbine was built in 1884 by Charles Parsons and this became the beginning of generating electricity and powering large ships. The author of Steam Turbines, Professor William John Couldie D. Sc, was a mechanical engineer who had practical experience in a marine consulting engineering service and lectured in the theory and practice of mechanical engineering. This book is an example of the development of technology that contributed to the evolution of steam turbines. The book is also significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more.Steam Turbines, by William J. Goudie, D. Sc., Second edition, rewritten and enlarged. Published by Longmans, Green & Co. in 1922. The book has a textured green hardcover with a printed black title on the front cover and a gold embossed title on the spine. The fly page describes the contents.
