Portrait of Will Rees from Australian Photographic Journal. c 1909. Will J. Rees born at Fiery Creek near Beaufort in 1856. Died in Mayes Street Stawell in 1938. Will Rees started working as a carpenter and at 21 worked as a sign writer and decorator. Later in life he became a celebrated artist. An exhibition of his work held in 1927 attracted over 1000 people. He is also noted as a writer of historic events which happened in Stawell during his lifetime in the town. Original photograph by W. This postcard may have belonged to the donor's paternal grandmother, Maggie Johnston Rees (1867-1964) as the writer is 'M. J. Rees'. Maggie married in 1935, so this postcard dates before that time possibly c1920s. These and other postcards and photos came from the estate of David Moyle (1938-2015) who was a police officer in Emerald during late 1960s-early 1970s, and subsequently at Belgrave in the early 1980s. David Moyle was closely associated with the now defunct Sherbrooke Historical Association.This postcard is significant because it was part of a collection belonging to a community member who had a close association with a local historical society.Tourist postcard with panoramic view of Queenstown and Mt Owen, Tasmania c1920s.Printed on bottom of front: 'QUEENSTOWN, WESTERN TASMANI. This postcard may have belonged to the donor's paternal grandmother, Maggie Johnston Rees (1867-1964) as there is another postcard in the collection recounting a trip in Tasmania where the writer is 'M. J. Rees'. This postcard is probably post-1926 when the company had completed a renovation of their Devonport building (which included 'a large, illuminated clock'. These and other postcards and photos came from the estate of David Moyle (1938-2015) who was a police officer in Emerald during late 1960s-early 1970s, and subsequently at Belgrave in the early 1980s. A photo of the finale of the 1953 demonstration. There is a large portrait of the Queen and her coat of arms above the stage with a Legacy torch suspended high above it. Junior legatees on stage in many different costumes, including beef eaters, soldiers, and in naval uniforms. Flag bearers hold Australian, UK, and Welsh flags. Some of the children hold musical instruments. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Names on the back of the photo could be those who ordered reprints. According to the Ballarat College Report, Prize list and Prospectus published 1875 Miss E Rees was Dux of the school 'Ladies Department' and winner of the Mr R F Glover's Prize Essay. This book was awarded to Miss E Rees the following year by the Ballarat Ladies College associated with the ballarat Grammar School, Principal F J Thomas. Thomas had been appointed principal of Ballarat College in 1874 following the untimely death of the school's first principal Robert Oliver McCoy. However Thomas's credentials were questionable and he left the school under a cloud during 1875. Thomas established a rival college. This action had a devastating impact on Ballarat College because many students enrolled at the new college. This book is evidence of just one such transition.
