Railways collection -photo of a sketch of 'Jackson Creek Viaduct Opening (Courtesy ARHS Vic Division Inc.)'. The Jackson Creek Viaduct is a bridge about 24 miles from Melbourne and is 80 feet high being constructed of Footscray Bluestone piers and abutments and wrought iron girders. The girders were made in England and delivered to the colony by the time the the piers were ready to receive them. The laying of the foundation stone of this viaduct marked the opening of the line to Sunbury on 13 January 1859.photo, 'jackson creek viaduct

The buildings in the photograph are of the former pumping station, which was at the base of the Jackson Creek viaduct, north of Sunbury Railway Station. It was part of the infrastructure used to supply water to the steam trains on the Melbourne - Bendigo line. The water was pumped from the creek and taken by horse-drawn cart to the water tower at the station. With the introduction of piped town water supply for Sunbury in 1906, the need for the pumping station was no longer required. The pumping station supplied the water for steam trains in Sunbury for 37 years before the introduction of the town water supply.A non-digital scanned black and white photograph of 2 small sheds in a valley. This viaduct is at Sunbury just north of Rupertswood. It was constructed in 1861 by Cornish and Bruce for the railways. It is a 3 span wrought iron box girder on tapering basalt piers. Additional brick supports were added in 1917 to cope with heavier trains.Diggers & mining. The gold era. Later, the line to Castlemaine was constructed. The post card is one of a set of commercial cards produced for Sunbury. Each card featured particular buildings or places of interest in the town. This card included Ben Eadie winery, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, the former old mill by Jacksons Creek and the railway viaduct and bridge at Rupertswood. Two viaduct bridges were constructed across the Jacksons Creek valley at Rupertswood on the Bendigo rail line to bring the trains down the steep incline into Sunbury station.A photograph of the railway viaduct bridge showing one end of the span and 4 of the pylons. The photograph was taken when some work was being carried out on one of the arched railway bridges on the Sunbury line. The bridge spans the Jackson Creek and across the Rupertswood viaduct. The photograph shows a section go the Jacksons Creek at Sunbury where it is spanned by the high arched Rupertswood railway bridge north of the town and known as the viaduct, on the Bendigo line. The photograph was taken in the grounds of Rupertswood, William Clarke's country mansion. The waterway is the Jackson Creek and the bridge spanning the creek is one of four along the Sunbury - Bendigo railway line. The post card waas assembled by Salesian College, which is in Rupertswood Mansion. The six images are sites within the Rupertswood Estate and are as follows: Clockwise from L-R- Sheep at the Bridge crossing at Jacksons Creek, Friesan Stud sale, Shearing sheep, Jackson Creek flats, Rupertswood Mansion, Railway bridge spanning Jacksons Creek. Initially Salesian College started as an agricultural school training boys in farm skills. The two steam trains are hauling the carriages over the viaduct that spans Jacksons Creek, situated north of Sunbury.
