Australian servicemen who served in the Second World War often returned home with souvenirs from battle. Whilst the provenance of this particular flag is not documented, it may be a Good Luck Flag or yosegaki hinomaru; a flag signed by family members and given to Japanese servicemen deployed during the Second World War.Large black frame with gold inner surround. Japanese Good Luck Flag was given to a soldier and was signed by dignitaries,family and friends often with short messages wishing the soldier victory,safety and good luck. We understand that it was deliberately dyed blue as they had lost the war and surrendered. This flag may have belonged to -Mr Sueji KOMAGI or KOMAKI Silk Dark blue flag with Red sun in middle. Appears to have faded and may have been dyed blue at later stage. Has faded. Many Japanese markings, inscriptions on the front of the flag. World war 2 Japanese good luck flag carried by Japanese soldier in the Pacific. Good luck flags were commonly carried and bore the names of members of the soldiers home town.It is believed that this flag had previously been on display at the old Footscray depotJapanese flag comprising of red circle centrally located on a stained white background with black conji lettering surrounding the central red circle. The flag is quite badly stained and has rips and moth holes distributed evenly across its face. there is some slight bleeding of the red colour into the lighter fabric above the circle. As per wording supplied by the donor. Flag found on the body of a Japanese soldier by a Coast Watcher found by villagers. He was from a Japanese submarine of New Guinea possibly near Popondetta. It was found hanging in a Long House Papua New Guinea and swapped for a Slouch hat in 1972. M.V Krait manned by Naval and Army Personal was responsible for sinking 38,000 tons of Japanese shipping during a wartime raid on Singapore Harbour in September 1943. The crew covered themselves in black stain and wore sarongs to resemble Malay fishermen. Whilst in service she carried a Japanese Flag.Framed print containing 4 photographs. Depicting M.V. Beltana was launched in 1921 at a cost of £179,000. She was a passenger liner built specifically for the UK-Australia emigrant service via the Cape of Good Hope. In October 1917, she was requisitioned for Transatlantic service where she carried munitions and supplies, returning to emigrant service in 1919. On 31 March 1930 she was sold for £27,000 to Toyo Hogei Kabushiki Kaisha, Japan for conversion for the whaling trade. She was not renamed, being laid up in Japan. She never traded under the Japanese flag. In 1933 she was sold to Gentaro Kasegawa, Kobe for demolition.
