Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold and Tin Mine company was formed in 1899. By 1909 17,284 ounces of gold and 224 ton of tin ore had been recovered from the mine and it was deemed inadequate and uneconomical to continue. the mine was re-formed in 1914 and carried on large-scale hydraulic sluicing operations. Interestingly, the name El Dorado does not derive from the gold in the region, but from the Barambogie pastoral run completed by William Baker in 1840-1841. Gold was discovered in El Dorado 1854 but the gold was too deep for individual prospectors to find, it required the use of heavy machinery. In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age."[4] He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed.[5] MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. This photograph depicts a power house for the Cocks Pioneer Gold and Tin Sluicing Company and is dated 1900-1912. John Cock migrated to Victoria from Cornwall in 1854 and worked on the El Dorado mines for 20 years, before going on to become a superintendent and/or advisor to all Indigo shire deep lead companies of the 1890's. The Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold and Tin Co was formed in 1899 at El Dorado, an area to the east of Beechworth proper, which marked the transition in this area from traditional lead mining methods to open cut sluicing and was said to use pump hydraulic sluicing to best effect in the Beechworth division. This power house fuelled the mining operations of the company with a steam-powered generator. This photograph has historic significance and research potential for study on the gold mining of the Beechworth region, specifically the new methods used, types of equipment, and the power sources required to fuel expanding mining operations after the initial gold rush of 1853-1854. Joseph Cock (1861-1922) was the son of John James Cock and his wife Amelia Tonkin. In 1893 he married Mary Elizabeth Tozer and they had the following children:- Henry John 1894-1956; Gertrude Mary 1896-1972; Joseph Alexander (Alec) 1897-1918; Arthur Leonard 1899- ;Samson George 1900-1900; Evie Eileen 1901- ; Mary Elizabeth 1903-1994. MAry Elizabeth Snr died 15/5/1903 leaving Joseph with 7 very young children. In 1906 he remarried to Clara Horell (1872-1948) They went on to have five more children and Clara became mother to them all. The Cocks Pioneer Mines operated from 1901 until 1941 and found a total of 117,378 ounces of Gold and 1,673 tones of tin concentrates over these years. Field Trip Preparations - Tellurometer traverse, Wyndham, Western Australia to Borroloola, Northern Territory 1960. This was a Tellurometer Traverse undertaken to establish 1st order EDM traverse (geodetic survey of Australia) from Mt Isa to Borroloola with airborne barometric altimetry in the Camooweal area. Followed by 1:250,000 map control by 4th order astro, airborne barometric altimetry and air photo annotation from Georgetown. Laplace Astro carried out as a separate activity from Camooweal, working north to Borroloola and east to Richmond. Also ‘Leap-frog’ barometer heighting from Croydon to Esmeralda closing on State BM at Croydon. Base camps were established at Camooweal for the traverse and Georgetown for the map control and annotation. Bilby towers were used on the coastal section of the EDM traverse, east and south of Borroloola. Vehicles used were Austin Champs (with Rolls Royce engines) and Humber one-ton trucks with Landrovers used for first time on a field trip. This is a set of seven photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in North Queensland in 1958. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control. In this era surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and chains to measure base line distances between survey stations. Bob Skitch shown in photos .4P to .6P was in the 2nd year of his career in the Australian Army. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and his last appointment was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1976 to 1980. The Long Gully Fire Brigade was ready for action in October 1873. The operated from a depot near the Wesleyan school room and members had been supplied with uniforms. On the 3rd of October the brigade, led by Captain Phillpot, marched into the city to take possession of a fire engine supplied by Council.Copy of a newspaper article titled A gift for fire station.
