Hans Knorr (1915-1988) was a sculptor in bronze, wood, stone and mixed media - many of which were commissioned for churches. Hans was trained as a cabinet maker in Germany. Following internment in Victoria during world War II, he married author Hilde Dent in 1948, decided to remain in Australia and earned international acclaim as a sculptor. In 1961, he opened his own gallery, the Emerald Gallery in Emerald, which he ran for many years. Hilde Knorr (1917 – 2009) Descended from English and Scottish pioneers of the Latrobe Valley, Hilde Knörr grew up in the Moe-Warragul district, then studied music in Melbourne. She married the Bavarian-born sculptor, Hans Knörr, and began writing articles and short stories when her children were small. She published novels, short fiction, biography and poetry. She also published the non-fiction works Religious Art in Australia (1967) and Merriang: An Early Victorian Homestead (1981), a property at Myrtleford, Victoria, where Knörr had resided.
