Newspaper Article, 'More To Judaism Than Just Praying', The Australian Jewish News, 28 November 1969, 1969
Newspaper Article 1, 'More To Judaism Than Just Praying', published in The Australian Jewish News, 28 November 1969. Newspaper Article 2, 'Bialik Aim is $25,000', published in The Australian Jewish News, 28 November 1969. Newspaper Article 3, 'No Force', published in The Australian Jewish News, 28 November 1969. Newspaper Article 1: "Judaism for us does not mean only a necessarily praying in the morning - we have nothing against praying but Judaism is a lot wider than religious life". Assimilationist talk? Religious revolt? Hardly. The speaker Mr. Moshe Meretz Principal of Bialik College discussing his school's curriculum.Free ChoiceThere is no conflict between the school and the home: if a child does or does not want to drive a car on Shabbat it is his or his parents' problem - either way it is alright by the school. The speaker is Mr. Moshe Meretz, Principal of Bialik, must change seem to a refreshing non-religious parents of children at strictly Orthodox day-schools- parents who must "make believe" they are observant or explain to their children what the teacher says doesn't really apply to them. Bialik College aims to give every child a "deep and large background of Judaism"."Judaism" Mr. Meretz says, "is something so wide you can't cut it into pieces". It is a way of behaviour - this is the criteria a way if life of thought of basic moral principle. The school teaches the history of the Jew as a nation and together with it his culture. History: The Jewish people were a free nation for only a short period. The first temple took a long time coming but the state quickly split. The second temple lasted only a few hundred years and usually under the domination of foreign empires; then there was the long Diaspora till modern Israel. Mr M. Meretz said by the end of primary school the child will have been taught of the First and Second temple in Biblical History and Hebrew. The curriculum also covers the development of the nation - Joshua Judges, consolidation of the tribes. In Forms one and two the child is taught the history of the past 200 years - Zionism and development of Jewish orientation to, and beginning of the fight for national freedom. Hebrew is taught as a modern language and culture. Apart from teaching it as a language, in the higher classes half the Hebrew lessons are used to teach other subjects - there are five periods of Hebrew language and five Hebrew periods in general subjects such as geography of Israel." Newspaper Article 2: "Bialik College has set a target of $25 000 for its 1969 appeal which commences on December 1. College President, Mr.I. Kipen, in announcing this said that the last appeal, in 1967, almost reached its target. At this stage, the appeal directorate has provided for only two drawing room meetings relying on personal contact for the bulk of the contributions. Mr. I. Kipen said the College aims to commence building another block of six classrooms next year and this, in fact, will require more than one appeal. The additional rooms will be ready by the 1971 school year. Funds are also required to augment the running cost deficit and to assist in repayment of capital and interest on loans for previous developments." Newspaper Article 3: "Mr. Meretz says this is indicative of the high standard reached in Hebrew. This high standards applies to all subjects - Jewish and general - as is testified by the presence of a number of non-Jewish children at the school. There are 250 children and 23 staff members a ration of one to eleven. The child will not revolt against us as we are not imposing anything Mr. Meretz concluded. "We are interested in the child's feeling of identification with the community, the State ofIsrael, Jewish culture, producing good Australian citizens with a good general education and most of all the child's self confidence. "This way, though I will not say it is the only way Judaism will have a good chance of surviving strongly in the 20th Century in the cultural revolution we are facing". The Bialik College appeal is being conducted through the month of December."shakespeare grove, hebrew school, judaism, donors, israel, zionist, community -

Article, "Education In Jewish Manner", The News, 28 March 1969, 1969
Newspaper article "Education In Jewish Manner" published in The News, 28 March 1969. "'The Samuel and Margaret Wynn House' a new classroom block at Bialik College was officially opened on Sunday (March 23) by Mr. Sam Wynn. Mr. Wynn said most of the people attending were parents and grandparents of children at the school. "I envy you" he said "in that you have the opportunity to give your children their education in a proper Jewish manner. "When my children were small there was nothing at all in Melbourne to give them the spirit and knowledge of Judaism. At the time I was struggling to establish a business and had no time though I had the knowledge to teach them. Mr. Israel Kipen, College President, said the function was the third of its kind in three years. In 1963 Bialik opened as a day school; 1966 marked the Dora Cukier memorial and now the first permanent four-classroom wing was being opened. The college in a short time has achieved so much - it has a fine reputation in the community and two hundred students. CONCERNS ALL: Mr. Kipen said it was a proud moment not only for the school but for the entire Jewish community as the opening of every classroom no matter which school is a simcha. Mr. Walter Jona MLA said he was happy that the College was in his electorate and of the fine reputation it has acquired. Mr. Maurice Ashkanasy, QC, vice-president of the Executive Council of Australian Judaism congratulated Bialik College on its progress. He said in Jewish tradition that there should be some diversity in education "for out of diversity grows strength of the Jewish people".Mr. A. Feiglin, Principal of Mount Scopus College, said that when it comes to Jewish education "we make no differentiation between schools". It is a great tragedy he said, that so few people attend a function like this. Unfortunately the community in general does not have a great interest in Jewish education. Mr. J. Solvey Bialik College Appeal President said the school is a pioneer - it was the first school to teach recent Jewish History, to teach Hebrew as a modern language and to introduce the Sephardi pronunciation. Mr. Moshe Meretz, College Principal, said Judaism is more than a religion - it is a way of life a school of thought and culture. This is what the college sets out to teach, he said."shakespeare grove, hebrew school, judaism, major donors, building -
