After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. (Margaret Picken, 2020)This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a number of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. Each work is signed and dated by the artist.Gift of Margaret Picken, 2020Pen and ink architectural drawing on drafting film of 153 Kilby Road, Kew East by Margaret Picken.153 KILBY RD., KEW / MARGARET PICKEN '95 / WOODARDS ~ KEWartist -- margaret picken 1950-, architectural drawings -- houses -- kew (vic.), 153 kilby road -- kew east (vic.)

The furriers Keitel were established in Australia early in the Twentieth Century. The business was initially in Port Melbourne in Beach Street and later in Lt Collins Street, Melbourne. In 1916, 1918, 1924, and 1927 there were newspaper reports of robberies at the business; an indication of the monetary value of furs in the past. There was an interesting connection to Jewish refugees to Australia reported in Australian newspapers in 1939, which relates to the Keitel family. OFFICER'S WIDOW A REFUGEE MELBOURNE, Wednesday. - A widow, whose husband was killed in action while a German officer in the Great, War, reached Melbourne in the Marella, a refugee from Nazi Germany. She is Mrs L. Fuchs, and on the wharf she met her, brother, Mr K. Feitel, a Melbourne furrier, for the first time in 40 years. Another, brother, Mr I. Feitel, travelled with her from Vienna. Mr I Feitel is a watchmaker, and has been in the business in Australia for about 50 years. He has brought with him an agency to establish here, for the well-known Swiss watchmaking company, Chaux-de-fonds. ESCAPED INTO HOLLAND. Having escaped from Germany into Holland, 80 refugees brought to Australia in the Marella were taken by Dutch ships to Batavia, where they Joined the Marella. Seven landed in Brisbane, 40 in Sydney, and 33 in Melbourne. There was only a few British subjects in the ship. Hard cover book. The Victorian Government Gazette 1914 Vol 2 /153 Printer: Albert John Mullett Publisher: Albert John Mullett Publisher: Authority of The Colonial Government Date: 1914 Further Information: Textured hard cover bound book leather burgundy colour spine with gilt lettering, covers embossed blue cloth & reinforced corners to front and back cover. non-fictionThe Victoria Government Gazette and other government documents from 1887 were printed and published by Robert S. Brain, Government Printer, Melbourne. Brain held the position of Victorian Government Printer through the 1890s and into the early 1900s. The same imprint appears on other official Victorian publications from that era, such as the annual reports of the Board for the Protection of the Aborigines and the colony's Statistical Register. There wasn't really an editor in the modern sense the Gazette was compiled and issued under the authority of the colonial government, via the Chief Secretary's Department, with Brain's printing office producing and publishing it. In May 1906, James Kemp succeeded him, serving as Government Printer from May 1906 to August 1912, with the title of Acting Government Printer right at the very start of his tenure he was stepping into the role Brain had just vacated, and by later in December 1906 he was signing gazettes in that capacity, apparently before his appointment was made permanent. Then in 1912 Albert John Mullett took over the role starting from January 1912 the same way Kemp had as Acting Government Printer with his appointment made permanent in 1913 where he served all through the 1920s. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, book, the victoria government gazette 1912 1 vol 146, the victoria government gazette 1912, the victoria government gazette
