Machine - Curtiss P40E Kittyhawk A29-53 (41-13522), 1941
Historical Details: The Curtiss Kittyhawk P-40E A29-53, construction number 16738, was originally built for the USAAC as 41-13522 but delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force in March 1942 as part of Lend Lease aircraft diverted to Britain. A29-53 was shipped into Austral. Description: In all more than 800 examples of the Kittyhawk served with the RAAF, mainly in the South West Pacific Area, making it both numerically and operationally the most important type employed in the defence of Australia in World War 2. The original aircraft depicted was assigned to the US 5th Air Force, 49th Fighter Group, 9th fighter Squadron and flown by Lt. Reynold from May 1942 until early August 1942. The aircraft was nicknamed "Stardust". On 8th August 1942 this P40 was assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force as Kittyhawk A29-136 and assigned the code letter "N", retaining the "Stardust" nickname. This aircraft was often flown by Flying Officer Bruce Watson of 75 Squadron RAAF.1/48 plastic scale model of a P40E-1 Kittyhawk painted to represent 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force in New Guinea in mid 1942.kittyhawk -

Kittyhawk Fighter. One of a collection of 25 model aircraft made by Brian Anthony DOWD The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. The British Commonwealth air forces used the name Kittyhawk for models equivalent to the P-40D and all later variants.The Kittyhawk was the main fighter used by the RAAF in World War II, in greater numbers than the Spitfire. Two RAAF squadrons serving with the Desert Air Force, No. 3 and No. 450 Squadrons, were the first Australian units to be assigned P-40s. Eight-day clock from a Kittyhawk aircraft flown by Flight Lieutenant Ian A. Lyons. Part of the Flight Lieutenant Ian A. (Joe) Lyons MBE Collection. See catalogue No 5374P for his service record.Analogue eight-day aircraft clock with square mounting and round face. Numbers 3, 6, 9 and 12 and hands are white in colour with a black background. A winding knob is located on the bottom left-hand corner. There are two threaded holes on opposite corners for attachment to the control panel of an aircraft. The casing is made from bakelite.Stamped on a plate on the back of the clock: 'ORDER No. AC26186, MFR'S. PART No. 1776, SPEC.
