The attached card states - 'Mother's knitting stick'. There is a brass hole one end with four brass nails where the tip of a knitting needle is inserted for support. The curved and fits into a belt or tape around the waist. Knitting was carried out on curved metal needles, one of these needed to be kept rigid by being held between the hand and knitting sheath held at the side of the body either tucked into a belt or held under the armpit. The sheath would allow someone to to knit with one hand whilst performing chores with the other. They also took the weight of the work and stopped stitches from slipping off the bottom of a double ended needle. Many were given as love tokens but there were plenty made by men for their daughters or other close family members.An antique curved carved wooden knitting stick or treen Knitting Sheath for hand knitters. Pioneers migrating to Moorabbin Shire brought items they thought would assist them in the new Country. They had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils while establishing their market gardens and farms. A wooden wool winder, with extending arms for winding hanks of wool into balls prior to knitting. For ease of use the winder also rotates. BHS CollectionHanro Journal: The front has a solid front and back cover and is of a green material with a marble type pattern trimmed at the top and bottom right hand corners with light brown suede triangles. The curved spine of the book is also light brown suede and the binding extends to 4cm on to the cover. 5.5cm down from the top of the spine is a 4.9 x 3.3cm red sticker with gold trim top and bottom of three strips and flowers under and on top of the third strips. The sticker has a tear and dog ears at the bottom. In gold in the centre is the word JOURNAL. The back of the journal is the same as the front but has more wear noticeable at top left and a tear at the bottom. Inside the cover is a paper lining of blue and cream mottled background with red uneven swirl a cream cloth spine with cotton thread for attaching. When the Journal is closed the pages form a colourful pattern of red, yellow, blue and green. Inside the book is light blue paper, on the left top hand written in pencil is 11/-, underneath that is 20/-. Numbers 24100, 27236, 25951, 25844 and some dacomb shorthand further down the page. On the right hand side centre of the page is the heading, hand written in black ink which has been underlined in red is *Hanro (Aust) Bendigo Knitting Mills Pty Ltd May 13th 1926* Page 1 of the Journal :- The Journal is all hand written in black ink and ruled up in red pen. At the top headed *Journal*, underlined in red. The page is ruled up into ten columns of various sizes. First column is the date May 1926. The page lists the distribution of Ordinary and Deferred Shared and their amounts. Next is Expenditure, for the land and buildings and setting up of the business, plant and equipment and various assets acquired from Bendigo Knitting Mills Pty Ltd. At the back of the book is a Debit Note From *Hands chin & Ornis S.A. Liestal (Suisse) to *Hanro* (Aust.) Bendigo Knitting Mills Pty. Ltd. Dated 10th September 1932. Debit Note No. 319. *Our payment to Messrs. Jacky, Maeder & C0, Basle as per your letter of August 10th 1932. This knitted toy rabbit was given to the donor as a child, made by a prisoner at the Geelong Gaol. The donor spent Christmas holidays at the gaol, below are some of her memories of these times: Eric Stafford was the Governor of Geelong Gaol and he and Elsie Stafford lived in the Governor’s residence at the front of the gaol where I stayed during Christmas holidays from about 1959 to 1962. ‘Aunty’ Elsie had the help of prisoners with the housework. One and sometimes two prisoners did the heavy cleaning of floors, windows and furniture polishing. I remember one prisoner down on his hands and knees polishing the lino in the long hallway to a bright gleam, and when a prisoner was helping in the residence, ‘Aunty’ Elsie, the prisoner and I would always have morning tea together in the kitchen. The backyard of the Governor’s residence was divided in two. The kitchen window overlooked the front part of the yard and I was allowed to play there with the dogs as ‘Aunty’ Elsie could keep an eye on me. The back part of the yard was behind a gated wall and I was not allowed in there as prisoners worked on the back garden, the chook pen and doing general maintenance – although I sometimes sneaked in with the dogs to see the chooks and have a chat but was called back. In the back there was a large padlocked iron bound door in the large bluestone wall which ‘Uncle’ Eric could open. A couple of times he took me through this door which opened into the gaol’s large vegetable garden. I only went twice as a didn’t like going there because all the prisoners working there would stop doing what they were doing, stand and silently stare at me. Of course holidaying in Geelong there was always the great beach and carnival rides. ‘Aunty’ Elsie and I would walk to and from the beach and on the way home would stop and buy an ice cream at the nearby shop. Sometimes we would buy an ice cream for ‘Uncle’ Eric and if there weren’t any vans, prisoners or visitors in the gaol entrance courtyard I was allowed to take the ice cream to ‘Uncle’ Eric in his office after ‘Aunty’ Elsie phoned him from the residence. ‘Uncle’ Eric had a sheep farm in Meredith and sometimes he took a prisoner with him to do some work on the farm. I can remember on the way to the farm sitting in the front seat of the vehicle squeezed in between ‘Uncle’ Eric and a prisoner with the dogs and equipment in the back tray. - Donor, 2025Woollen cream knitted toy rabbit in a knitted pink dress with a knitted green petticoat, knitted green panties and a little knitted cream rabbit tail. This minute book is the last one. The Branch celebrated their 80th Birthday in October 2019. Throughout those years the unit raised money for the Red Cross by making flannelette pyjamas, knitting, holding dances and euchre nights and sent clothing and food parcels to England. In 1959 they raised 80 pounds with a bazaar. They collected medical equipment to loan to those who needed it and held craft displays, fashion parades and film nights. George Victor Lansell was Born in London in 1883, eldest son of George Lansell ('Quartz King') and Edith. Educated at St Andrew's College, Bendigo, and Melbourne Grammar. Married Edith, a skiing champion, in 1910; honeymooned overseas and visited Egypt. Named his Bendigo home 'Denderah' after an Egyptian archaeological site. The house featured art nouveau architecture and a Widow's Walk for astronomy. Commissioned in the 8th Australian Infantry Regiment in 1904; captain by 1909. He served in France during World War I with the 38th Battalion; wounded but returned to service. George organized the northwest Victorian Volunteer Defence Corps in WWII; retired as honorary colonel in 1942. Served as a Nationalist Party member for Bendigo in the Legislative Council, later joined the Country Party.President of the Bendigo branch of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia for nearly 30 years. Led fundraising for the Soldiers' Memorial Hall and its brass honour rolls. Director of several local companies, including Sandhurst Trustees Co. and Bendigo Mutual Permanent Land and Building Society. Introduced Hanro Knitting Mills and the Australian Swiss Watch Co. to Bendigo.Acquired and merged the Bendigo Independent with The Bendigo Advertiser. Built a clinic at Bendigo Hospital with his mother; donated medical equipment and supported local institutions like the Benevolent Home, art gallery, School of Mines, and YMCA.Recognition and Legacy.
