The Ballarat School of Mines had a 'Model Mine' that was used to teach students. Practical work was undertaken for a fee, supervised by laboratory superintendents. Copies of assays undertaken are compiled together in this book. Leatherbound ledger with transfer copies assay reports from the Ballarat School of Mines. Those seeking assaying work from the Ballarat School of Mines are listed in alphabetical order in the front of the ledger. The ledger contains 543 pages. .2) Foolscap assay report on foolscap Ballarat School of Mines letterhead, and signed by Alfred Mica Smith, Superintendent of Laboratories. The report was on eight samples of Quartz submitted by R.C. Morgan, Scotts, Hotel, Melbourne .3) Assay report on Ballarat School of Mines letterhead, dated 14 August 1985, and signed by Andrew Berry, Registrar. The assay was supervised by Professor Alfred Mica Smith, and undertaken for James Burke, Broken Hill, New South Wales. .4) Assay report on Ballarat School of Mines letterhead, dated 18 August 1988, and signed by Alfred Mica Smith, Superintendent of Laboratories. The assay was undertaken on samples of Limonite submitted by James Burke and others, Broken Hill, New South Wales. A regular event for the widows was a concert by the Police Band, 'Off Beat' at the Melbourne Town Hall. Held in March each year, it was originally at the Fitzroy Gardens but moved to the Town Hall in 1995. The Victoria Police Pipe Band also played and used bagpipes. One performer dressed as Elvis (Brian Carbery). The photos show the widows enjoying the music and performers, and what appears to be the winner of a prize receiving a suitcase. A photo of a class of young legatees in 1951, in a garage, called the East Brighton Group. There are 29 boys, of various ages, in gymnastic gear with the Legacy logo on the chest and 4 men who could be the instructor and a Legacy member. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years, such as gymnastics and swimming classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. The notes on the back mentioned there are 6 other groups of boys (perhaps those in Kew, Fitzroy, Footscray, Malvern and Auburn in the other photos mentioned). The names are: From the left, rear: L/. Storrer, Lieut. Harvey Freeman, John Cameron, Allan Jenkins, S.E. Scott, R.D. Briers, Percy White. Four people on this list were killed in action: Lieut. Francis Hope Lascelles was killed on Weds, 22 Aug. 1917. He served with a British regiment, the 42 Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Inf.) and has no know grave but is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium; Harold Thomas Burn was a 2nd Lieut. with the 58th Bn, Aust. Inf., AIF and was killed on Sat. 23 Dec. 1916 aged 27. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery in Rouen. Henry Haigh Storrer was a Captain with the Australian Flying Corps and was killed on Sun. 2 Dec. 1917 aged 28. His brother died at Gallipoli in 1915. Henry Storrer is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord. Lieut. Harvey Freeman served with the 11th Coy, Aust. Machine Gun Corps and was awarded a Military Cross. The two semaphore flags were used as a pair for visual signaling by hand. The semaphore system is an alphabet signaling system based on the waving of a pair of handheld flags in a particular pattern to compose words to be communicated to passing ships. The system was introduced by the Royal Navy in 1880 and was later adopted in Australia, with the first School of Signaling opening in Williamstown in 1890. The system was superseded in the 1970s by more sophisticated methods of communication. Information on the Cape Nelson flags indicates that they were made by Evan Evans P/L, Flag makers, 690 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. Evan Evans (d.1927) started a tent‐making business in 1877 and by 1920 Evan Evans P/L maker of canvas goods, was located at 680 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. In 1924 it acquired land at 632 Bourke Street and built a new factory. His son Ivor continued the business after 1927 and in 1938 opened a bulk store in Carlton.271 In 2016 the firm was located at 673 Spencer Street, Melbourne. Another pair of white semaphore flags made by Evan & Evans is held at Gabo Island, and Wilsons Promontory also has a pair. Cape Nelson’s white semaphore flags have second level contributory significance. They have historical importance as flags formerly used at the lightstation for visual signaling, a system that is now rarely used in navigation, and contribute to the importance of the lightstation’s large collection of flags.A pair of white flags made of white canvas/heavy cotton, the square flags are attached to dowel poles with staples.

The Red Ribbon Movement of 1853 represented a significant series of events in the history of Bendigo. During that year there was much agitation on the Bendigo gold fields, particularly during July and August of 1853, directed against the payment of what the miners called a tax - a licence fee of thirty shillings ($3) a month for the right to search for gold on what was declared Crown land. They had to pay the licence whether they found gold or not. The miners, or diggers as they were called, also resented the means used by the authorities at the time to collect the gold licence - through so-called 'digger hunts'. The miners were expected to carry their licences with them, and the police, who were often untrained, used harsh methods to check these licences. In Bendigo, the miners took to wearing a red ribbon ‘as a symbol of their protest against the licence. Red was a very common colour in items such as shirts, so was readily available. Shopkeepers too tied red ribbons to their premises as a sign of support for the miners. It should be remembered at that time virtually everyone was a miner. The diggers also had their own banner, designed by William Dexter, a china painter from Devon. This flag showed the pick, shovel and cradle representing labour, the scales representing justice, the Roman bundle of sticks meaning unity and the kangaroo and emu of Australia Many thousands of Bendigo miners signed a petition to La Trobe, the Governor of Victoria, protesting against the licence fee. When the Governor rejected the petition, thousands of diggers marched in peaceful protest. Miners from White Hills, Eaglehawk, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat as well as from Bendigo Flat, converged on what is now Pall Mall and View Point, surrounding the ~government camp on Camp Hill. The camp had been reinforced with soldiers of the 40 Regiment, as the Government feared bloodshed. The miners then gathered on the hill behind View Point to hear from their leaders - among them George Thomson, Captain Harrison, Captain Brown and W.D.C. Denovan. They resolved to pay a token fee often shillings ($1) for the September licence, whenthey met with Commissioners Panton and Wright on Camp Hill. Although Wright and Panton were sympathetic to the miners, the offer was rejected, but no licence fees were collected for September. Thus a possible bloody conflict was averted by the common sense shown by the miners' leaders and the commissioners. It was a truly democratic protest against arbitrary government and preceded the Eureka Stockade Incident by over a year.
