This lace collar would have been detachable for easier cleaning and would have been worn by a lady during the 19th century. Its original owner is unknown, but it was purchased in the late 1990s by the donor who later moved to Emerald but, at the time, had a 2nd hand decoration shop in Camberwell when she purchased this as part of a group of garments which included bloomers, lace collars and cuffs, camisoles etc. - all of which have been donated to the Museum. The donor was informed at the time of purchase that the garments were over 100 years old.This lace collar is an illustration of how 19th century women could embellish and vary their garments through the use of different detachable collars and cuffs.Two halves of a lace collar sewn from a cream-coloured lace. Cream coloured linen and lace ladies dickey. Front opening with crossover. Each side made from two pieces of silk fabric. Crossover forms V shaped neckline. Edge of crossover has lace trim (5cm) folded back to form collar effect. Lace has scalloped edge. On each side at waist level. Front has tape tab (2cm X 9cm). Tab on LH side has 5cm loop attached at side. Clothing. Square crocheted lace collar, in a floral design. Medallions, 2.3 cms square - 116 medallions. Each medallion has a flower at the centre, with a row of three dimensional ''petals''. A finely crocheted piece, with a semi-circular edging at the square neckline, and around the outer edge. 9 cms deep, one side has an opening but no fasteners are evident. Clothing. Very large, deep, linen lace collar.- Brussells Bobbin lace. Six large ''tear-drop'' shapes - 8cm long, enclose a delicate floral design. Thirteen daisy like flowers are spaced around the outer edge, along with leaves and smaller flowers. The long neck - edge is edged with a leaf - like design lace. Clothing. Rectangular in shape, the collar has a square profile at front and back. Cream linen Brussell's bobbin lace, with an all over small daisy ( 1.5 cm diameter ) design. Rounded at the neckline, with one opening, probably at the back of the neckline, the collar is 14 cm deep. Clothing. Lace trimmed, white cotton fabric, collar with square back, and long peaked 'lapel' type front. Neckline edge is finished with a fine one cm wide lace band. The cotton fabric is scalloped, also edged with the above lace band, which extends into a 5.5 cm band of cotton lace. The 'lapel' shape extends into a wider 'lapel' type circular motif. Clothing. Beautiful cream lace in a deep curve (which possibly may have been the front or back) extending over the shoulders, into two long peaks- possibly a deep, V neckline. The lace has diamond shapes, woven in groups of four in a larger diamond shape, and also in a Maltese Cross type grouping. These appear to be ''fillers'' between circular shapes, 6 cm in diameter, of four-petalled flowers''. The outer edge has a scalloped effect, each with a Maltese Cross'' type filler. Clothing. Cream guipure lace collar with floral curvaceous design. A large petalled motif at the centre back (or front) with a peaked effect at the front (or back). Delicate threads and small ''balls'' of cotton thread fill between the larger motifs. Clothing. Fine cream silk in a 8 pointed star shape, in the centre of the handkerchief - 15 cm diameter. Fine silk lace, 10 cm deep, surrounds this centrepiece. Adjoining the star shape is a one cm wide border, surrounded by 1.5 cm flowers, identical to those in the matching collar(11414.26). A Maltese Cross design in each corner brings the piece to a square shape. This joins fine lace in a flower and leaf design, with the Maltese Cross design in each corner, and at centre of each side. Fan-shaped edging surrounds the handkerchief, and a repeat of the needle - woven flowers as in 11414.26.costume accessories, female, silk handkerchief

Lace collars and cuffs were used by women in the late 19th and early 20th century to embellish their clothing. They were able to be detached which made them suitable as a decorative object on clothing that could be easily changed when required. Duchesse lace, was produced in Belgium from about the mid-nineteenth century onwards. In general, it was regarded as a cheaper version of 'true' Brussels lace and is a form of bobbin lace. The lace set was part of a collection belonging to Alice Matilda Barrie. Alice was born on October 17th, 1885 at Willowie, SA, she died on May 10th, 1981 in Adelaide. Alice was the daughter of Thomas and Luisse Mathilde Wood. Thomas was the publican of the Willowie hotel and Alice's brother Frank owned the Willowie store where the lace set may have been purchased. A family photo shows Alice wearing a lace collar in the early 1940’s which confirms her use of similar articles.The lace set has significance historically and socially as an example of textile accessories women used to embellish their clothing in the late 19th and early 20th century.A Duchesse lace set comprising three collars, a pair of cuffs and a hanky. Two of the collars are rounded and the third has a rectangular back and falls to points at the front. The lace on the hanky has been handstitched to the fine linen centre shape.
