This cushion belonged to Bert Vivian who was a saddler. His daughter, Betty Vivian, donated many items to the cultural collection including Bert's saddlery and leatherworking tools.Textile padded cushion with several needles inserted into it. The fabric is cream in colour with black and yellow lines creating a checkered effect. It looks to be handsewn and frayed around the edges. The needles in the cushion are of varying lengths and sizes. 'Ivory?' Chisel. Approximately 10cm long. One end is sharpened and flattened; the other is carved to form a 12-sided shape. Each end is separated by a circular stem approx. 2cm in diameter. The chisel is part of the contents of the John M Okey Toolbox. Mr Francis Guumes1884-1950, was born in the Cheltenham district and later bought land in Heatherton Rd, Heatherton, where he and his two sons developed a market garden. Mr Guumes , a self taught leather worker, made every piece of this harness. He entered this outfit in the Royal Melbourne Show c1947 and was awarded 1st Prize in his section. ( H. Thought to have been used in shoemaking classes held for repatriated soldiers at Ballarat School of Mines. At the Ballarat Technical Art School, during the early twentieth century, leather art was popular but had little industrial value and was usually a minor study. The Victorian Education Department set examinations in art leather work.
