Pre WW1 and WW1 1888 onwardsUsed before WW1 by the French Army and used continuously through the Boer War (African Campaign) and into WW1 1914-1918. 1 x 1888 issue Spitzer bullet 8 x 50mm R. Used with Lebel Model 1886 bolt action rifle and was the basic French infantry weapon of World War 1 (1914-1918). Probably brought to Australia by a returning soldier as a souvenir. Donated to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Collection when no longer of interest to family. Nickname 'Rosalie' by French soldiers, a reference to a popular song of the war years.
