Velvet Soap was a widely used laundry bar soap launched in 1906, produced by J. Kitchen & Sons, owned by John Ambrose Kitchen (1835 - 1922). Kitchen was born in Britain and emigrated to Victoria in 1854. After a less than successful period at the Caledonian and Blackwood diggings, Kitchen returned to Melbourne and joined his father and brothers in establishing a tallow candle making works. Through merger and expansion the company became the pre-eminent manufacturer of soap and candles in the eastern colonies in the mid to late 19th century. Kitchen also speculated in a number of enterprises but suffered financial setbacks as a result of the 1890s bank crashes. Despite this, the company continued to grow in the early twentieth century with the introduction of products such as Velvet Soap and Solvol. The company merged with the British company Lever Bros in 1914 who eventually took full control of the company in 1924, becoming Lever and Kitchen. Advertising for Velvet Soap in Australia was extensive and pervasive. All manner of surfaces were used to advertise the product such as building walls, roofs, and most commonly, enamelled sheet metal signs which were fastened to any available surface internally and externally. The most common form of sign that Velvet Soap used was the words 'PURE VELVET SOAP' in white lettering within a vivid dark blue, elongated Maltese cross. On the enamelled metal signs the Maltese cross sat on a red background with a yellow border. While this was the dominant form for Velvet Soap signs, there were variations from the standard. The parts of a straight razor and their function are described as follows: The narrow end of the blade rotates on a pin called the pivot, between two protective pieces called the scales or handle. The upward curved metal end of the narrow part of the blade beyond the pivot is called the tang and acts as a lever to help raise the blade from the handle. One or two fingers resting on the tang also help stabilize the blade while shaving. The narrow support piece between the tang and the main blade is called the shank, but this reference is often avoided because it can be confusing. The shank sometimes features decorations and the stamp of the country of origin. The top side and the underside of the shank can sometimes exhibit indentations known as fluting, or jimps for a more secure grip. The Label has the words 'COHN BROTHERS BENDIGO' arranged in a circular manner. In the Centre of the Circular label the Letters 'LT.D.' are also etched. Underneath the Main label are The Words 'British Syphon London' arranged in a circular form. The Sign 'Rg. No. 762, Australia' is also etched into the glass under the main label. The bottle has a 'fluted' shape and tapers towards the top. It is approximately 1 litre capacity diameter of the base is approx 80mm and height 350m. 1950 decade HAY FORK - A local invention. Bill and Arthur Gillespie and Bon Barrie In the early 1950’s Bill Gillespie of Bulmans Lane had been experimenting in developing a machine to improve the collection of hay sheaves at harvesting and stack building time. The ripened crop was cut by a reaper and binder which bundled the storks into sheaves tied with binder twine. The reaper and binder was towed by a tractor by the mid 1940s previously teams of draught horses were used to pull the reaper and binder. A photograph taken at the Barrie farm shows three binders the first being towed with a tractor and the others with horse teams. Two workmen were needed to operate the binder when cutting a crop. The sheaves collected on the binder and released onto the ground and were scattered across the paddocks. Using a conventional two pronged pitch fork the harvest hands collected the sheaves and placed each one cut edge on the ground in an upright position and layered with about 15 sheaves into an apex shape to form was is known as a stook. The shape of the stook allowed for drying and draining of water if rain had occurred. Prior to the invention of the mechanical hayfork this was a laborious task requiring each sheaf to be pitched onto a tray truck and moved to the location of the haystack. The mechanised HAYFORK was operated by one person on tractor greatly reducing the need for gangs of labourers. At harvest time farmers had relied on itinerant teams of workers descending on the district looking for work. The three Barrie brothers on their adjoining farms combined forces to cut their crop at its optimum time while the weather was in their favour. Up to many 20 workers at times formed a team in earlier times. Agricultural university students were also keen to gain practical experience in the field. Each of the brothers had a particular skill, and Tom Barrie was the expert on stack building. The district haystacks had a distinctive shape and could be recognised by their builder. Bill Gillespie’s first operational HAY FORK consisted of a large 13 pronged fork situated forward of the truck cabin. It was attached with iron girders and mounted on the rear of the cabin to the tray of his British Bedford truck. It was constructed in metal and iron and welded in the farmers work sheds. The mechanism was raised and lowered by the driver scooping along the ground to pick up a complete stook to raise high enough to deposit all the sheaves in one stook onto the stack or truck tray. The fork section was released by a rope and operated by the driver in the cabin. This model was trialled on the Barrie farm at Ferris Lane. It proved to be very successful and the Barrie/ Gillespie brothers went on to develop a HAYFORK which attached to a tractor and was operated with a series of levers and was raised and lowered hydraulically. It was detached from the tractor when stacking was completed. In its early days farmers travelling along the Western Highway called at the Barrie farm at Ferris Lane to inspect its construction and operation of the invention. It became a widely adopted by farmers throughout the State. It was being used on Wattie Palmer’s farm on Bridge Road Melton South in 1997. The design of this small disc is from the Australian Colonial period. The cedar wood desk was made in Australian by Foy & Gibson in the 1880s, most probably in the business’s works in Collingwood, Victoria. The heavy brass locks fitted into the desk drawers were made by the famous Hobbs & Co of London, mid-late 19th century. In 1860 the business changed hands but the locks were still branded Hobbs & Co. The desk is branded with the symbol of Victoria’s Public Works Department. There is currently no information on when, where and by whom this desk was used. However, a very similar desk with Hobbs & Co. locks is on site at the Point Hicks Lightstation in Victoria and was formerly used by the Point Hicks head light keeper there. Other light stations also have similar desks from the P.W.D. (see also ‘Desk, Parks Victoria – Point Hicks Lightstation, Victorian Collections’.) HOBBS & CO., LONDON Alfred Charles Hobbs, 1812-1891, was American born. He became an executive salesman in 1840 for renowned lock manufacturer Day & Newell. His technique of exposing the weaknesses of people’s current locks was very successful in generating sales. He represented Day & Newell at London’s Great Exhibition of 1851, competing with other lock makers. Through the Exhibition he became famous for picking the best trusted Bramah and Chubb locks. Hobbs’ fame led him to found his own company in 1851 then register it in 1852 as Hobbs & Co., London. Hobbs was awarded the Telford Medal by the British Institution of Civil Engineers in 1854 for his paper 'On the Principles and Construction of Locks'. In 1855 the very successful company added partners and became Hobbs, Ashley and Co. In 1860, it traded under the name of Hobbs, Hart & Co. and was based in Cheapside London, where the business remained. Hobbs then returned to America, having sold the complete company to John Mathias Hart. He briefly returned to attend the 21st anniversary celebrations of the successful business in 1872. Hobbs kept himself busy in America, inventing and manufacturing firearm ammunition, for which he held several patents. He passed away there in 1891, a month after his 70th birthday. FOY & GIBSON Mark Foy wan an Irish draper who migrated to Bendigo, Victoria in 1858, attracted by the gold rush. He lived and worked in the area, establishing a drapery business. In the 1870s he moved to Melbourne where there were better prospects for expansion. He chose a place in Smith Street, Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne, and started his business at the rear. In 1883 Foy retired, bringing in William Gibson as a partner, and then transferred his own share of the company to his son Francis Foy. Not long afterwards Francis sold his half share to Gibson, and the business continued under the name of Foy & Gibson. Francis Foy and he and his brother Mark Foy (junior) moved to Sydney. They established a business there in 1885, named after their father, Mark Foy. Gibson added to his business by starting his own manufacturing works from 1887, producing clothing, millinery, furniture, bedding and hardware for his stores. The factories, warehouses and stores complex became one of Victoria’s largest employers. He set up branches of his stores in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide and two more branches in Melbourne. Foy & Gibson (usually referred to as Foys) became one of Australia’s largest retail department stores. In 1931 Foy’s little house in Collingwood was still part of the entrance to Foy & Gibson Emporium. In 1955 the company was bought out by Cox Brothers. Later on the stores were sold to various businesses such as David Jones, Woolworths and Harris Scarfe. In 1968 Cox Brothers went into receivership, ending almost 100 years of the business known as Foy’s. The former Foy & Gibson Complex is registered by Heritage Council Victoria. “Designed by William Pitt, this magnificent 19th and early 20th century complex of factories, warehouses and showrooms saw the production of a remarkable range of goods for Foy & Gibson, Melbourne’s earliest department store chain”. (Quoted from the Plaque erected by the Collingwood Historical Society 2007) P.W.D. – Public Works Department, Victoria The desk is stamped “P.W.D,” signifying that it is from the Public Works Department in Victoria, which operated from 1855-1987. The department was responsible for, among other things, the design and supply of office furniture and equipment for public buildings and organisations. This desk is significant historically as it originated from Foy & Gibson, a colonial Australian company that had a positive and strong impact on employment, manufacturing and retailing in Melbourne, Victoria and Australia. The significance of Foy & Gibson to Victoria’s and Australia’s history is marked by the Collingwood Complex being registered in both Heritage Victoria Register (H0755, H0897 and H0896) and National Trust Register (B2668). This locks on this desk are significant for their connection with their manufacturer, Hobbs & Co, who invented a lock that surpassed the security of any other locks produced in the mid-19th century. Two half-width drawers fit side by side and extend the full depth of the desk. The drawers have dovetail joints. The ship’s telegraph section was once part of the navigational equipment of the famous paddle steamer, PS Hygeia, and was later installed on Flagstaff Hill’s exhibit, the steamer Rowitta. This is the Bridge Section of a ship’s telegraph, a Duplex Gong model, made by Chadburn & Son of Liverpool. The gong sounded two signals whenever the navigational commands to change the speed or direction were given by the ship’s pilot. Communication between the ship’s pilot and the engine room in the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries was made with a system called an Engine Order Telegraph (E.O.T.) or ship’s telegraph. The equipment has two parts, the Bridge Section and the Engine Room Section. The Bridge Section was usually mounted onto a pedestal, and the Engine Room Section was attached to a vertical surface. The standard marine commands were printed or stamped around the face of the dial and indicated by a pointer or arrow that was usually moved by a rotating brass section or handle. The ship’s pilot stationed on the Bridge of a vessel sends his Orders for speed and direction to the Engine Room with the E.O.T. He moves the lever or levers, depending on the number of engines the ship has, to change the indicator on the Bridge Section’s dial to point in the new direction and speed of travel. This change causes the Orders to be duplicated on the Engine Room Section’s dial and a bell or bells to signal the change at the same time. The engineer then adjusts the ship’s engines and steering equipment to follow the pilot’s Order. CHADBURN & SON, Liverpool- Chadburn Brothers, William and C.H., were joint inventors and well-established makers of optical and scientific instruments and marine gauges. The firm was granted the Prince Albert Royal Warrant in the late 19th century. In 1870, William Chadburn applied for a patent for his navigational communication device for use on ships. By 1875, Chadburn & Son was producing the brass Engine Order Telegraph in its plant at 71 Lord Street, Liverpool. In 1911, the ship, RMS Titanic, was launched, fitted with Chadburn & Sons E.O.T. The Chadburn Ship Telegraph Company Limited was registered in 1898 to take over Chadburn & Sons. In 1903, a large factory at Bootle, near Liverpool, and its products were being sold overseas. In 1920, electric-powered telegraphs were developed. In 1944, the name changed to Chadburn’s (Liverpool) Limited. In 1968, the company became Chadburn Bloctube Ltd. In 2000, the company, now Bloctube Marine Limited, was still manufacturing ship telegraphs. The P.S. HYGEIA 1890-1932: - This ship’s telegraph was installed on the new paddle steamer, PS Hygeia, one of three iconic pleasure steamers famous for providing regular services in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, to thousands of passengers between the ports of Queenscliff, Sorrento, Portsea, Dromana, Rosebud, Rye, and Mornington. It joined the Ozone and the Weeroona, all three described as being glamorous, powerful and fast. Its ticket office was on the pier itself. The P.S. Hygeia was built in Yorker, Scotland, in 1890, by Napier, Sharks & Bell. It was registered in Melbourne, Australia, by Hubbart, Parker & Co. in 1891. The steel ship was 92 metres long, able to travel at 22 knots, and licensed to carry over 1600 passengers in luxury, with even a barber shop on board. The regular service between the ports in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, continued for over 40 years. With the decline in passenger demand, the service wound down. The Hygeia was sold to H.M. Morris in 1931 for demolition and breaking up. Equipment, fittings, and even lifebuoys were sold, with many items purchased by people who had some connection to the Hygeia. On August 25th, 1931, what was left of the vessel departed Port Melbourne and eventually, in June 1932, it was laid to rest at the ships’ graveyard outside Port Phillip Heads. The SS ROWITTA 1909-2015: - The ship’s telegraph was originally installed on the PS Hygeia. It was purchased when the Hygeia was broken up in 1931 and later installed, in 1975, on Flagstaff Hill’s SS Rowitta, an exhibit greatly enjoyed by the public until it was demolished in 2015. The ferry “SS Rowitta” was built in 1909 in Hobart, Tasmania. The timber steam ferry was built using planks of Huon and Karri wood. It was a favourite with sightseeing passengers steaming along Tasmania’s Tamar and Derwent rivers for 30 years. Rowitta was also known as Tarkarri and Sorrento and had worked as a coastal trading vessel between Devonport and Melbourne, and Melbourne, Queenscliff and Sorrento. The vessel had given over 100 years of service and pleasure. This Bridge section of a ship’s Engine Order Telegraph, used with an Engine Room section, represents late-19th-century change and progress in communication and navigation at sea. This type of equipment was still in use in the mid-20th century. It is significant for its association with its maker, Chadburn & Son, of Liverpool, a well-known marine instrument maker whose work was recognised by English Royalty, and whose products were selected to supply similar equipment for use on the RMS Titanic. The ship’s telegraph is also significant for its association with the paddle steamer PS Hygeia, one of three iconic steamers that transported thousands of passengers from port to port within Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, for over 40 years from the 1890s to the 1930s. Queenscliff Borough remembers the Hygeia by naming a road near the pier Hygeia Drive. The Hygeia is registered on the Victorian Heritage Database as a vessel of significance, VHR S329. In 1901, Hygeia had the privilege of carrying their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of York, from Mornington to St Kilda Pier, Melbourne, during their Royal visit celebrating the Federation of Australia. The ship’s telegraph is also important for its connection with the Rowitta, a large exhibit on display at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, aiding maritime education for over 40 years. It represented the importance of coastal traders to transport, trade and communication along the coast of Victoria, and before the availability of rail and motor vehicles, serving many roles. Bridge section of a Ship’s Telegraph or Engine Order Telegraph (E.O.T.). The round, double-sided, painted glass dial is inside a brass case behind glass. It is fitted onto an outward tapering brass pedestal with a round base. The brass indicator arrows between the handles point simultaneously to both sides of the dial when moved. An oval brass maker’s plate is attached to the top of the case. The dial’s faces have inscriptions that indicate speed and direction, and the front face and plate include the maker’s details. A serial number is stamped on the collar where the dial is fitted to the pedestal. The ship’s telegraph is a Duplex Gong model, made by Chadburn & Son of Liverpool. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the steel and rural produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006.This item was an important everyday feature in many stores when items were wrapped in brown paper before the introduction of plastic bags.The paper dispenser has a wooden top and base, with a cast iron frame and lever. There is a removable metal rod which holds the paper roll in place. It was used for dispensing brown wrapping paper.
