Dr Lisa ANDERSON (1958- ) Dr Anderson’s research questions environmental issues that impact on the social structures of communities and their mapped or metaphysical borders. She develops projects around ways of understanding the effects of climate change. These include work with folklore, legends and religions that tell stories of coping with weather, forced migration of animals and people and coping with difference. She has undertaken international residency programs and exhibitions in the Arctic, Iceland, Paris, Norway, London and China, and she was the first Artist in Residence at the Australian Museum. These unique opportunities continue an extensive art practice of installation work, video, photography and sculpture. Anderson has an extensive record of exhibitions in Australia and overseas with work included in both private and corporate collections. Her exhibitions include Journeys: Due North, a large installation work that includes work created over a 10-year period of engagement in expedition and science work North of the Arctic Circle. Beneath the Beauty of Architecture, an exhibition at her London Gallery, Bicha, used images created in China, Nunuvut Territory in Canada and the Antarctic while working with the migration stories of survival. Dr Anderson has created many large scale artworks that challenge notions of occupation of the City, including Writing the City, a three-year program of installation works to shift the use of Sydney to being a city of public space in its pre-Olympic development. Singing up Stones celebrated the people who created and use the Opera House and the Quay for performance and ideas. This included the first image projection onto the Sydney Opera House, a projection onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a ballet of cruise liners with the sound simulcast on the local radio station. Lisa Lodge Girls' Hostel, Ballarat, was established in 1970 and was run by a committee of women. All the women were Honorary Probation Officers. It provided residential care for eight adolescent girls at a time. Lisa Lodge was located in a number of different properties around Ballarat. The Hostel closed in 1994. Some time after this, Hayeslee House (another home in Ballarat, run by the same committee) became known as Lisa Lodge. This Committee managed a number of institutions in the Ballarat region. Another institution to start in 1994 was Berry Street Incorporated that amalgamated with Sutherland Child, Youth and Family Services. In 2009 Berry Street was the largest independent child and family welfare organisation in Victoria. In 2012 Lisa Lodge merged with Berry Street to strengthen Berry Street's services provided in the Grampians Region of Victoria. This research paper explores the first ten years of Lisa Lodge. Of note is Lisa Lodge was set up by a group of women for a group of women. It depended on donations to continue operating. Data was collected through interviews and analysing minutes of meetings. Correspondence and newspaper clipping were also used. This is a historical report so there are no recommendations. Before proceeding with this project, Beverlee Leith had to seek approval from the Human Research Ethics Committee, University of Ballarat. Photo of a portrait by Kim Tarpey of Tracey Naughton. Tracey was Eltham’s first Community Arts Officer. Kim coordinated a couple of drawing groups at the North Riding Living and Learning Centre. This organisation eventually metamorphosed into Living and Learning Nillumbik (Panton Hill). Tracey sat for the portrait group. The work was exhibited at the Community Centre in an exhibition organised for the Eltham Festival. Unfortunately the work went missing later down the track when on loan to an art centre and has not been recovered. I have been interested in urban design and landscape since a child. My early fascination with maps corresponded to early mark making inspired by maps, topography, legends and aerial depictions. This developed into the use of a bold colour palette often used by map makers to delineate sections, contours and geology. Over time I experimented with a range of techniques and enjoy pushing expected techniques and materials to their limits. The painting explores the mental health issues often faced by those who work at sea as a result of loneliness, isolation and illness, amongst other things. This seafarer’s face is made up of thousands of SOS Morse code symbols: dot,dot,dot dash,dash,dash dot,dot,dot. Morse code was used to signal to land that a ship or crew was in trouble. This seafarer is in trouble- his face says it all and speaks volumes.
