Bridgewater is a situated 39km northwest of Bendigo and 170 km from Melbourne. It was established as a crossing point over the Loddon River for gold diggers en route to the Inglewood gold diggings. As gold began to dry up in the district the town of Bridgewater developed due to its proximity to the river which it relied on for industries such as brewing, farming and market gardens. As demand on the water supply grew, the Water Works were established to ensure supply and manage the quality of the water for drinking. Decorated hand operated cast iron embosser with 40mm seal head attached. Gold and orange painted decorations extend from top edge of handle to sides of base. The Kurting State School No 2353 opened in 1881. The name changed to Hope Creek State School in 1893 and then in 1928 became the Powlett State School. The school burnt down in 1944 with school being held in the hall until the end of 1945. In 1946, the children of the area were bused to Inglewood. The Spring Gully Gold Mining property consists of Gold Mining Lease No. 2986, Castlemaine, of about 21 acres situated on the Emu Reef, in Spring Gully Fryers. There are two shafts, distant about 300 feet from each other. From one of them large quantities of gold were obtained in former years by previous companies. Hallmark stamped on bottom of back.Engraved on reverse side: "Presented by the Shire of East Loddon to R.H. Baron in grateful appreciation of service rendered in A.I.F. in the Great War."
