Freemason Lodges in Victoria were numbered in the order they were founded. The Balaclava Lodge was 162 and is now defunct. Dance cards became popular in the Victoria era. Ernest Morton Vains (1881 - 1951) was a local business man and Bendigo councillor who arrived in Bendigo in 1897 aged 16 from Kerang. In 1916 he founded the firm E M Vains and Co with his brother Sidney and they operated from Hargreaves Street in Bendigo with branches in Elmore, Mitiamo, Dingee, Knowsley, Heathcote and Prairie. E. M. Vains was a member of the City Council from 1922 - 1926 and was elected Mayor on August 29th, 1924. He played a prominent role in many of the City's community and industry groups and was a member of the Rotary Club which was founded in 1925 and a member of the Corona Lodge of Freemasons. The Sebastopol, or Guiding Star Lodge was consecrated on 22 May 1999 following the amalgamation of ‘Hope No. 274’, ‘Orion No. 53’ and ‘Sebastopol No. 63’, three of Ballarat’s oldest Freemasons Lodges with a combined total of over 345 years of masonic history, and is chartered under the United Grand Lodge of Victoria. In 2011 the Sebastopol and other Central Ballarat Lodges were sold, with the lodges now meeting at 616 Barkly Street, Golden Point. Murray Comrie Collection. Information written by Murray Comrie: Dr. Philip H. Donovan took up practice as resident surgeon at Tarnagulla in April 1894 following the death of Dr. Dickson. He took up residence at Joyce's and then moved to opposite the (current) Post Office in Commercial Rd. He later took up residence at 79 Commercial Road, next to Runtings hairdresser and sporting good store.. With Dr. Deravin he successfully operated for appendicitis on S. James. He died suddenly on Tuesday 8th September 1903 from an aneurism. He was unmarried and aged 38 years. He was so highly regarded that the people of Tarnagulla erected a monument over his grave at Tarnagulla Cemetery. On Sunday 11/9/1904 members of St. George Lodge of Freemasons, Dunolly made a pilgrimage to the grave to mark the anniversary of his death. Monochrome photograph depicting Dr. Philip H. This book contains the Constitutions of the Freemason Lodges in Victoria. Freemasonry is a world-wide benefit society. Moves were made in the 1860s to establish a Masonic Lodge in Warrnambool with the first Lodge being St. John’s (No. 895). The Masonic Hall in Kepler Street was built in 1870. This book belonged to a member of the Flaxman family and John Flaxman was a prominent Warrnambool resident in the 19th century – an insurance agent and moneylender in the 1860 and 70s and an employee of the auctioneer, Samuel Macgregor. The book, however, seems to belong to a W. Flaxman. John Flaxman had a brother William but, as far as can be ascertained, he did not live in Warrnambool. There is nothing known so far to link this book with Warrnaambool but it is kept because of the name ‘Flaxman’ and so it may have some relevance.This is hard cover book of 142 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering on the front cover. The cover is slightly marked. The Bendigo Masonic Hall (now the Capital Theatre) was built in 1873 -74 for both public and private use and contained lodge rooms, a public tavern anda concert hall. The Masonic section occupied the northern side of the building at ground floor level and included a lodge room at the rear, a library and reading room, and other affiliated rooms. Walls of the entry hall and lodge room were decorated with classical columns and panels ornamented with Masonic emblems. The upper level of the building contained a large hall with balcony at the north end and removable stage at the south end. Elaborately decorated with Masonic emblems, this hall was used for Masonic purposes as well as being available to the wider community for social events. The tavern, which became known as the Masonic Hotel, occupied the basement and the ground floor of the southern side of the building and included a sitting room, parlours, billiard room, bedrooms, kitchen, cellars and servants' rooms. It appears that two public entrances were provided for this section, one directly from street level into the basement, the other from the public entry hall.
