Henry Browne and Son Ltd, of Barking, made aviation and nautical compasses, clocks and dials. The company made compasses for aircraft notably, Spitfires, Tiger moths and Concord. Henry Browne was born in Lewis, Sussex in 1842 and died in Barking in 1935. His company was a well respected English instrument maker that had been making and selling fine quality compasses, ship's clocks, inclinometers, sextants, and chandlery items for over 140 years. It started in a factory in Brightlingsea, Essex and moved to Barking in 1929. The Trade Mark brand Sestrel was used on all their equipment. Their “Dead Beat“ compass design is well dampened serving to reduce oscillations. It is reported that this design compass was fitted to many Allied ships during WW II. The company went through a boom period in the 1970s but collapsed in the 1980s due to the popularity of cheaper plastic compasses over tradition brass ones. Over more recent years, there has been a consolidation of British instrument makers and the firm of Henry Browne & Son has changed hands a number of times. At last count, it became part of Lillie & Gillie of London in 1985 when John Lilley & Gillie Ltd acquires the assets of Henry Browne & Sons (Sestrel) Ltd, a major competitor for what may be the second time. The model name of Sestral came about via the following.Take first two letters of the word Sensitive then the firs two letter of steady and the firs three letters of reliable hence the trade name of "Sestral". The brush/comb was used for identifying coating defects in steel mains. It was attached to a low voltage electrical supply and then used to brush along the steel pipe to test for faults in the coatings. If there is a fault in the coating, a spark would occur. The coating was propably coal tar Possibly used in the Otway Water Supply SystemRusted metal comb/brush, one side top half painted black to avoid conductivity of electrical currentpipes. maintenance

The lamps were pioneered by the British Navy in the late nineteenth century and introduced by the Royal Australian Navy after 1918, and continue to be used to the present day. Manufactured in 1960, the Wilsons Promontory lamp was provided to the lighthouse by the Department of Shipping for signalling ships but was also used for communicating with Cliffy Island, 18 nautical miles away. This type of lamp was renowned for its brilliant light, and lightkeepers from the two lightstations ‘used to practice their signalling with each other, as its effective use was reliant on precise positioning of the scope which is located on top of the lamp’. The inside of the case is imprinted with ‘RAN (Royal Australian Navy), and details on the lamp include a serial number, the date of 1960 and the initials of the Department of Transport, which at that time incorporated the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service. Another Aldis lamp and case with a date of 1960 is held at Cape Nelson and third lamp and case is at Point Hicks; (date unconfirmed but possibly 1943). A fourth lamp and case formerly at Cape Schanck disappeared from the collection sometime between 1995 and 2003.Aldis lamp and case (WPLS 0003.2; likely provenance) The lamps are not rare in museum collections however the Wilsons Promontory example has a confirmed provenance to the lightation and has first level contributory significance as a fine example of the Aldis lamps that were distributed to lightstations throughout Victoria and Australia.1. Handheld black signaling lantern with trigger mechanism. Glass front with inner reflective disc. Black electrical cord is attached with a two pronged plug at the end. 2. Black painted wooden box for transporting lantern. brass catch, leather handle. Grey electrical cord inside plus transformer. Hinged lid. The Aldis lamp is portable, hand held visual signalling lamp with trigger mechanism and inner reflective disk used for optical communication via Morse code. The concave mirror is tilted to focus the light into pulse signals. Larger versions of the lamp are fixed on ships or pedestals and have shutters in front of the device that are opened and closed to transmit signals. In September 2025, Brimbank Council confirmed that its first community battery would be built in Gresham Way Reserve Sunshine West. The selected site was Gresham Way Reserve, chosen because it sits on suitable Council‑owned land, the local Powercor network has strong rooftop‑solar uptake, and the low‑voltage network could benefit from stabilisation and solar‑storage capacity. The capacity of the battery is 500kWh. The battery decorative artwork was by Artist Melanie Caple, featuring Galahs, Australian indigo flowers, large‑leaf bush peas. The artwork was selected by community vote. The battery was officially switched on 16 July 2026, marking Brimbank’s entry into shared renewable‑energy infrastructure.7211.01 - Brimbank Community Battery - Brimbanks First Community Battery Switched On - Star Weekly 28th July 2026 Page 5gresham way reserve, gresham way, sunshine west

This is a 6 valve portable transceiver, made in Australia from a British design. It was only used for C.W. (morse code). Its frequency was in the range of 2.5-3.5MHz. Output power 0.5-5 watts. Use was for commando and infantry patrols up to battalion level. It had an external battery pack for low and high voltage supply. 1 man operation in Tropics.
