Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. This is a set of 14 photographs of an All-Staff meeting held by the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of April 1994. At this meeting CO LTCOL Duncan Burns announced that under Defence’s Commercial Support Program (CSP), the In-House bid submitted in 1993 by a team led by then CO LTCOL Bob McHenry was successful. The In-House bid proposed the establishment of an organisation based at Fortuna to carry out non-core production with 150 of the 373 Survey Corps positions converted to Defence civilian positions. 110 of the Defence civilian positions would be filled voluntarily by military personnel under Section 81B of the Public Service Act 1992 with the remaining 40 positions filled by Public Service recruitment. Other options offered to Survey Corps personnel were postings to 1st Topographic Survey Squadron in Enoggera, QLD, transfer to another Corps in the Australian Army or discharge from the ADF. The In-House bid also proposed 143 Survey Corps military positions to remain at Fortuna to perform ‘core strategic non-sovereign tasks.’ However, Army subsequently decided to abolish the 143 positions, disband 4th Field Survey Squadron, Adelaide, SA and lastly, the demise of the Royal Australian Survey Corp in June 1996. This collection of 34 photos of Lithographic Squadron personnel and equipment was taken in at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, in 1992. The photos were mainly taken in the Camera, Contacting, Printing, BARCRO and Production Control work areas, as well as outside Fortuna’s buildings. Although these photos are not annotated most personnel are positively identified. This set of 23 photographs were taken at the Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 1st of July 1995. This occasion was to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Duncan Burns, and the Reviewing Officer was the Deputy Chief of the Defence Force MAJGEN G.D. Carter AM. Also in attendance was his MA MAJ M.D. Bornholt AM and the COL COMDT of the Royal Australian Survey Corps COL Don Swiney MBE. On this occasion the Reviewing Officer presented the Defence Force Service Medal to SGT Graham Hales and SPR Ken Labouchardiere for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. SSGT Russ Mollenhauer received the Defence Force Service Medal clasp in recognition of 20 years of service.
