Postcard, 1915
... Main Arena... sidesaddle side saddle side saddle riding Main Arena 1913 Royal ...This postcard appears to have been produced so various judges and stewards could reply directly to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria to accept their positions at the 1915 Show. The 1915 did not go ahead, as the Showgrounds was offered to the Department of Defence for use in response to the First World War. Although staff operations would move to the Melbourne Showgrounds during the Show, for some time, outside of Showtime, the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria's offices were in the CBD on Collins Street. Staff operations became permanently housed at the Showgrounds in 1957.[obverse] WAITING for the JUDGE / MELB "ROYAL" SHOW / [reverse] PSOT CARD. / MELBOURNE ROYAL SHWO SERIES. / [table] 1913 Show (compared to) Highest / Previously / Entries ... 9,827 8,536 (1912) / Attendance .. 184,637 167, 390 " / Profit on Show .. £7,432 £6,502 " / Prize Money Awarded £4,586 £3,934 " / [end of table] Date,............1915. / I hereby accept the appointment / of Judge (judge has been struck and replaced with Milk Steward in handwriting) in Section............, in / compliance with the request of your council. / Signed.................... / Full postal address................. / RENWICK, PRIDE, NUTTALL. Reaping the Whirlwind offers amazing insight into the events of World War II through the eyes of those who fought against the Allied forces in all theatres of the war. The book covers every major arena of the war: Europe; the German invasion of Russia; Rommel's Afrika Korps; and the Pacific war between Japan and forces of the US, Australia and New Zealand. Reaping the Whirlwind uses the authentic voices of Germans and Japanese people caught up in the conflict and highlights the similar deprivations and dangers experienced by both victors and vanquished.Index, bibliography, ill, maps, p.288.non-fictionReaping the Whirlwind offers amazing insight into the events of World War II through the eyes of those who fought against the Allied forces in all theatres of the war. Book, George H. Doran Company, Revolt in the desert, 1927
The Arab Revolt of 1916-1918, when the disparate tribes of Arabia rose up as one great force to defeat an empire, was one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Middle East and a pivotal element of the Middle Eastern arena of World War I. It sounded the death knell for the Ottoman Empire and paved the way for a new colonial power in the region - the British. It was T.E. Lawrence, a young army officer with a brilliant military mind and unmatched knowledge of the region and the Arab people, who - alongside the charismatic Faisal I - led the Revolt. These were epic events that changed the shape of the Middle East and affected Lawrence for the rest of his life. His magnificent first-hand account of the period is now a classic of 20th century literature.Index, ill, map, p.335.non-fictionThe Arab Revolt of 1916-1918, when the disparate tribes of Arabia rose up as one great force to defeat an empire, was one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Middle East and a pivotal element of the Middle Eastern arena of World War I.
