The Chicory Kiln built in 1870, a two storey brick building is adjoined by West's General Store, built in 1869 to cater for the needs of the Settlers. A large Gum Tree and finally houses follow on from these two buildings. This was Arnie Brown's house in the main street of Cowes. Arnie lived at Hastings, but came to live on Phillip Island in 1908. One of the best known boatman - he provided fishing trips for visitors. He died in the autumn of 1952 from an accident when tying up at Cowes Jetty. He had numerous fishing boats.Old house in Thompson Avenue, Cowes. The first kiln built on Phillip Island in the 1870's for Mr John West. It was situated in Thompson Avenue next to Wests General Store. When the kiln was demolished, the bricks were used to build the old Post Office on the corner of the Esplanade. Mr John West gave a Banquet at the Isle of Wight Hotel to celebrate the opening of his kiln.Water Colour Sketch. This picture was reconstructed by Jean Archibald from pencil sketches by S Serpell in 1905, and an artist who travelled to Phillip Island with the "Vagabond", a journalist for the "Leader", in 1889. Laurie is a member of local pioneer family. He was born in 1938, in the hospital gifted to the island community by his grandparents William and Lucy Thompson, after whom the Cowes main street is named, twenty minutes before his twin brother John.
