This is an early manual can opener, designed for cutting open tin cans before the invention of the rotating wheel-style openers. These types of openers were widely used in the late 19th to early 20th century, when canned food became popular. The hooked end was used to puncture the can lid, and the curved blade would be maneuvered around the edge to slice through the metal.This is a vintage cast-iron can opener with a simple yet sturdy design. It features a solid handle with embossed lettering, which reads "GUARD". At the opposite end, there is a curved cutting blade and a hooked section for puncturing and guiding along the lid of a can. The surface of the opener has a dark patina, with signs of rust and wear, indicating significant age and use. Hewitt’s airway was the first known oral airway and laid the foundations for the numerous other airways that were later developed. The development of the oropharyngeal airway is one of the lesser-acknowledged advances in anaesthesia. Oral airways made anaesthesia safer and significantly reduced the trauma associated with earlier attempts at managing the obstructed airway. In 1908, dissatisfied with the use of tongue forceps and that Esmarch’s maneuver sometimes failed, he described the first oropharyngeal airway, the Hewitt Airway. The Huon Pine whaleboat was made on site by the boat builders at Flagstaff Hill in1989, of the clinker-planked construction method. Whaling was carried out in the 1790s up until the 1970s in the Southern Ocean off the coast of Australia, including southwest Victoria. The whales were hunted for their oil, baleen, meat and other products. It was a lucrative but very dangerous occupation. The small whaleboats with their five crew members were easy to maneuver but also easily overturned by a writhing whale. The Southern Right whales had desirable attributes; they came close to shore, they were slow swimmers and they floated when dead - hence the name 'Right' describing the right whale to hunt. The whale population was greatly reduced until 1979 when the Australian government prohibited whaling. These whales still visit the area annually to breed in the shallow bays along what is now called the Shipwreck Coast of Victoria. The whaleboat represents a significant time in Australia between the 1790s and 1979, when the whaling trade was carried in this area, and around Australia, providing employment and meeting the demand for whale oil, meat and other products. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. These models are of single horse drawn military gun carriages and accessories.Three gun carriages: 1. A brown four wheeled wooden model of a gun carriage for military use with a white horse. The carriage wheels have black rims with grey painted spokes. There is a brown storage box at the front for the driver with a brown vinyl padded seat.Three wooden slats form the footrest. A gun cleaning rod and lighter rod are attached to the back of the narrow support tray towards the back wheels. The saddled horse is linked to the carriage by a wooden shaft. A gun carriage is a frame and mount that supports the gun barrel of an artillery piece allowing it to be maneuvered and fired. These platforms often had wheels so that the artillery pieces could be moved more easily. 2. A brown large two wheeled gun carriage with no horse. The wheels have grey painted spokes and black rims. There is a cleaning rod and a lighting rod attached to the carriage shaft near the wheels. An additional accessory is included of a black vinyl saddle with lambswool lining as well as clips for attaching to the horse tack. 3. A grey two large wheeled gun carriage with no horse.
