The Braybrook Shire Hall...Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall ...The Shire of Braybrook (1871–1951) was a vast, semi‑rural municipality stretching from Melton to West Melbourne, centred on the old Braybrook village at Solomon’s Ford. It transformed dramatically with the arrival of railways, the rise of Braybrook Junction/Sunshine, and the industrial boom driven by H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. The area was first organised as the Braybrook Road District on 28th May 1860, after a public meeting at the Shamrock Hotel in Albion. The district was enormous, extending from Melton to Dynon Road on the West Melbourne swamp. Early settlement clustered around Solomon’s Ford on the Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall in Deer Park was built in 1885. That 1885 building was the first official hall and council offices for the Shire of Braybrook, long before the municipality shifted its centre of gravity toward Sunshine. It stood near the Deer Park Hotel and served as the administrative heart of the shire during the late 19th century. The Braybrook Shire Hall at Deer Park effectively closed as a council headquarters in 1930, when the Shire of Braybrook shifted its administrative centre to Sunshine. In 1951, the Shire of Braybrook was renamed the City of Sunshine, reflecting the shift of population and industry eastward. In 1994 - 1995 the Kennett Government reduced Victoria’s councils from 210 to 78, the largest restructuring of local government in the state’s history and this part of the City of Sunshine became the City of Brimbank. It is believed this extension table came from the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office located in Ballarat Road, Deer Park, opposite the Deer Park Hotel. Over the years this extension table was used in the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office Ballarat Road Deer Park, the Shire of Braybrook and City of Sunshine Memorial Hall Hampshire Road Sunshine and in the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices Alexandra Avenue Sunshine. When the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine closed down, this table was were presented to the Sunshine & District Historical Society by the City of Brimbank. The table is still in use by the staff at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, Ballarat Road, Deer Park. This table is one of the few remaining items that still connects us to the early days of the Shire of Braybrook.Wood extension table with two extension leaves and carved legs.shire of braybrook, shire of braybrook offices, ballarat road, deer park -

However, in 1994, Victoria underwent council amalgamations, which resulted in Braybrook being incorporated into the City of Maribyrnong. The suburb of Braybrook continues to attract considerable attention from the residents of City of Brimbank, particularly its historical features, the old buildings and distinctive streetscapes that characterise the area.To capture the essence of Braybrook in 2021, a series of photographs were taken. These images document a range of buildings, street scenes, and other notable points of interest throughout the suburb, providing a visual record of its unique character.5580.01 - Ashley St - Former 3LO - AWA Frequency changing building 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.02 - Ashley St 65- 67 Braybrook - Central West Shopping Centre 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.03 - Ashley St 185 - 195 Braybrook - Former National Springs 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.04 - Ballarat Rd 226 Braybrook - Ashley Hotel Ballarat Rd 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.05 - Ballarat Rd 234 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.06 - Ballarat Rd 234 Braybrook 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.07 - Ballarat Rd 244 - 246 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.08 - Ballarat Rd 256 Braybrook - ETA Factory Facade 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.09 - Ballarat Rd 256 Braybrook - ETA Factory Facade 2021 Photo 04.JPG 5580.10 - Ballarat Rd 261 Braybrook - La Porchetta 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.11 - Ballarat Rd 272 Braybrook - Former Holden Car Dealership 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.12 - Ballarat Rd 282 Braybrook 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.13 - Ballarat Rd 286 - 288 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.14 - Ballarat Rd 288 - 290 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.15 - Ballarat Rd 290 - 292 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.16 - Ballarat Rd 306 - 308 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.17 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.18 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.19 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel 2021 Photo 03.JPG 5580.20 - Ballarat Rd 353 Braybrook - Braybrook Hotel Blue Stone Bar Sign 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.21 - Beachley St 23 - 33 Braybrook - Shops 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.22 - Beachley St 23 - 33 Braybrook - Shops 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.23 - Braybrook Commons Community Gardens Skinner Reserve 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.24 - Cranwell St 40 Braybrook - Klipspringer 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.25 - Darnley St 83 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.26 - Duke St 144 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.27 - Evans St 1 Braybrook - Harkrome Quality Electroplaters 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.28 - Evans St 9 Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.29 - Gilbert St 8 Braybrrok - Steeden Engineering Co Pty Ltd 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.30 - Hampden St Factory Demolishment 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.31 - Kent St Braybrook - Sunshine VRI Bowling Club 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.32 - Kent St Braybrook - Sunshine VRI Bowling Club 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.33 - Kent St Braybrook - Sunshine VRI Bowling Club 2021 Photo 03.JPG 5580.34 - Lily st Braybrook - RecWest 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.35 - Maribyrnong River Temple to Temple Trail Sign 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.36 - Maribyrnong River Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.37 - Marj Laffin Scoreboard Kinder Smith Reserve Lily St Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.38 - Myalla St 40 Braybrook - Salvation Army Hall 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.39 - Myalla St 40 Braybrook - Salvation Army Hall 2021 Photo 02.JPG 5580.40 - Quang Minh Buddhist Temple Burke St Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.41 - Quang Minh Buddhist Temple Gardens Braybrook 2021 Photo 04.JPG 5580.42 - Ramon Vila Pavilion Kinder Smith Reserve Lily St Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.43 - Solomon Ford Maribyrnong River 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.44 - South Rd 204 Braybrook - Caroline Chisholm College Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.45 - South Rd 204 Braybrook - Caroline Chisholm College Quinn Auditorium Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG 5580.46 - William Barak Sign Duke St Reserve Braybrook 2021 Photo 01.JPG ballarat road, ashley street, beachkey street, cranwell street, darnley street, duke street, evans street, gilbert street, hampden street, kent street, lily street, maribyrnong river, myalla street, south road, 3lo radio transmitter, central west shopping centre, national springs, ashley hotel, eta factory, la porchetta, braybrook hotel, klipspringer, harkrome, steeden engineering, sunshine vri bowling club, recwest, kinder smith reserve, marj laffin, salvation army hall, quang minh buddhist temple, burke street, ramon vila pavilion, solomon ford, caroline chisholm college, william barak, aboriginal, aborigine, first nation, braybrook -

Murphy, Eglington street; G. Groube, Maribyrnong ...A picture of the original Gordon Lodge lodge-room of 1886 - room currently in use by the Lodge's artist-in-residence. Below is a newspaper article from the North Melbourne Advertiser (Vic: 1873 - 1894) for Friday 22 April 1887 that describes the architecture of the building at the time of its completion. From some of the details included in the article it is obvious that the journalist who wrote the article was a Freemason. THE MASONIC HALL ASCOT VALE North Melbourne Advertiser (Vic. : 1873 - 1894) Friday 22 April 1887 THE MASONIC HALL ASCOT VALE The now Masonic Hall, Ascot Vale, the foundation stone of which was laid by the Worshipful Master of the Gordon Lodge (Bro, W. F. Lamonby) in October last has just been completed, and will be formally opened: with grand Masonic ball on the 13th prox. The hall stands on a fine block of land having a frontage of 50ft to the Maribyrnong road by a depth of 130 ft., and is built of brick and cement on a most substantial foundation of bluestone. The Tuscan style of architecture has been adopted with the most successful result, and the front design which is especially handsome, includes four massive pilasters with frieze architrave and enriched cornice, forming the entablature of the order,- and giving a most imposing appearance. The front door, over which are the masonic emblems, is seven feet wide, and two escape doors made to open outwards in compliance with the Central Board of Health regulations are also provided, in case of emergency. In the vestibule is a very fine elliptic arch with keystone enriched with fruit, and the whole floor, 9ft. 6in. wide, is laid with Cawkwell's encaustic tyles. On the right, of tile vestibule is a commodious committee room 22ft. by 12ft 6in with side entrance for members, so that in case the main hall is engaged no inconvenience need be caused. On the left is the Secretary's room, and off this again is a staircase cellar. The vestibule is well lighted with two exceedingly pretty chandeliers, which have a very pleasing effect and give it a nice bright appearance ascending a handsome staircase leading from the vestibule the upper storey is reached, and here everything is splendidly arranged, especially 'the Lodge Room, which is a model of neatness and of comfort. The dimensions are 28ft. x 22ft 6in. with an elevation of 17ft. 6in. to the beautiful cove ceiling, which is quite a work of art. At the east end of the room on a raised dais is the master's chair with the masonic emblems, and neat forms of polished kauri are placed at the sides for members, about 150 of whom can be accommodated. The lighting and ventilation have both been well attended to and all is very complete. The main hall is 75ft. by 35 ft. with a stage 15ft. deep, leaving the auditorium 60ft. x 35ft. with a seating capacity about 600. Round the walls up to 6ft 6in. is a handsome dado in Portland cement and above it are panelled Tuscan pilasters to the entablature, architrave enriched frieze and medallion cornice forming the main cornice to the hall. Immediately inside the cornice is a sunken panel all-round the ceiling relieved with ornamental outlet ventilators. There are twelve large windows, six on each aide, and the sashes, skirting boards, and doors throughout the building are beautifully painted in imitation of grained cedar. Two enormous gas reflectors, each for 50 lights are suspended from the ceiling and besides these, four elegant hanging chandeliers for lighting up the proscenium, and back of the stage, under which is a storeroom for seats, &c, when the hall is required for a ball. The floor is made of kauri, secretly nailed, and is beautifully finished off. At the back of the stage are two lavatories and ladies and gentlemen's dressing rooms, between which are a connecting passage for a call boy. Outside is a capital asphalted yard, and the other usual conveniences on an improved plan. There is a right-of-way asphalted on each side of the building, and a large lamp is to be placed opposite the main entrance to light up the front. Everything that forethought and ability could suggest to make the hall comfortable and popular has been done, and it now only remains for the public to avail themselves of the advantages offered them by the enterprising Company. The cost of the building and furniture, including a magnificent piano, was £2,500, and the land £300. Mr J. C. M. Cowan, of Ascot Vale, is the architect, and Messrs Parker and Pater, of South Melbourne, the contractors. The plastering was done by Mr I Nicholas, of Murray Street, Moonee Ponds, who is also entitled to great praise for his splendid workmanship. Mr Cowan has been most assiduous and particular in seeing that his instructions were carried out to his satisfaction, and the result must be exceedingly gratifying to him and to the directors. The Masonic hall is only one of the many buildings erected by Mr Cowan in this district, among the others being the well known residences of Meessrs. J. Levy, Mooneo Street; W. Murphy, Eglington street; G. Groube, Maribyrnong street; C. A. Arvier, Moonee Ponds ; and F. Paul, Mount Alexander road. It may also be mentioned that Mr Cowan generously presented the plans for the now local fire brigade tower which is acknowledged to be one of the strongest and most graceful around Melbourne, The new Masonic Hall does infinite credit to the borough, and in accommodation, design, and comfort it is not surpassed by any similar building of the kind outside the city. -

Under Mr. Frank Johnston’s conductorship this band has held the championship for two years.” Trove article identifier: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article205116143 Scope and Content: Footscray’s Hyde Street State School Band, led by their drum major, prepare to march past a group of mothers while playing their instruments. The band held the record for winning the most Victorian State Schools Association Championships between 1931 and 1966. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Description: A large group of boys, most of whom are dressed in long trousers and peaked band hats, led by their drum major, prepare to march past a group of women dressed in overcoats and hats and an infant in a pram. In the background is a school shelter shed, a railway line, houses and a netball ring on a wooden stand. The Hyde Street State School Band was formed in 1928 as the school band for Hyde Street State School No. 1912 at 10 Hyde Street Footscray (now Footscray City Primary School). Their bandmaster, Francis Charles Johnston,(1880-1953) nicknamed “Massa” as a boy for his love and admiration of southern American jazz music, also conducted the Victorian Police Band, Collingwood Citizens Band, and the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade Band, amongst others, leading to scores of wins in brass band competitions. Even into his sixties, “Massa” ran three laps around the South Melbourne Oval every morning in order to maintain fitness for his busy conducting schedule. He was a cornetist and horn player, and performed in and lead brass bands for more than fifty years including bands that farewelled Australian troops from the Boer War to the Second World War. The Argus 13 December 1947, described “Massa” - “Bandsmen say he is a genius in brass band music, and the best conductor in the Southern Hemisphere. He still retains the romance and Bohemianism of the old German bandsmen he played with in the streets of Melbourne 50 years ago.” In 1925, a bequest of £10,000 from the estate of the late writer, William Gillies was made to the Education Department of Victoria. It was devoted to three purposes - “1) The encouragement of instrumental music (school bands or orchestras) in the State schools of Victoria, leading, it is hoped, to an increase in the number of village bands and orchestras, and, most important of all, family orchestras; (2) The encouragement of the art of reading aloud, leading, it is hoped, to an increase of the admirable pastime of reading aloud in the family circle; and (3) The encouragement of any branch of nature study, the aim of all three being to make home life, especially in the country, more attractive.” The Director of Education, Mr. M.P. Hansen wrote in his book “Thoughts That Breathe” published in 1932, that, as a result of the Gillies Bequest- “£3,030 has already been made available for the purchase of band instruments, and thanks largely to the encouragement given by this fine bequest, there are now in State schools in Victoria, each under expert tuition, 31 brass bands, 9 orchestras, 13 fife bands and 23 violin classes. That the effect of such work has a significant bearing on the right use of leisure, is undeniable.” By 1937, at least 50 State school bands had been set up in Victoria and the Victorian State Schools Association Championships were hotly contested. Frank quickly and skilfully brought the inexperienced boys of the Hyde Street Brass Band to A grade level, winning their first Victorian State Schools Association Championships in 1931. The band went on to win multiple times, holding the record for winning the most Victorian State Schools Association Championships between 1931 and 1966. The band soon became an integral part of community events. Whenever the Footscray Football Team played a home game at the perpetually blustery Western Oval, (Whitten Oval since 1995) the band performed at half time, marching around the boundary line, belting out the Footscray Football Team theme song- “Sons of the ’Scray” played to the tune of “Sons of the Sea” by British music hall songwriter Felix McGlennon. Volunteers walked behind the band carrying a large tarpaulin to catch the shower of coins thrown by fans from both teams, which helped pay for new instruments, repairs and uniforms. The old footy joke goes- Q. Who played on the wing at the Western Oval for 20 years, but never kicked a goal? A. The Hyde Street Band. Now called the Hyde Street Youth Band Inc, it is a not-for-profit organisation, supported by the City of Maribyrnong. Their aim is to make brass music accessible to young people aged from 5-25 years, by supplying the instruments and lessons for a modest annual membership fee. The traditional British brass band comprises of three musical ensembles according to ability. The Hyde Street Youth Band Inc. play at community events including the AFL Grand Final Parade, ANZAC Day March at the Shrine of Remembrance, Moomba Parade and Yarraville Carols by Candlelight. Their repertoire includes classical, marches, hymns, contemporary music and movie themes. https://bandblastsfromthepast.blog/2018/04/08/victorian-state-school-brass-bands-their-legacy-lives-on/ Massa" and His Musical Firemen (1947, December 13).
