Pompapiel is a small settlement between Dingee and Serpentine. Edward Martin (b. 1858)arrived in South Australia from Ireland in 1879. In 1882 they settled at Salisury West in Victoria. In 1909 he purchased the property "Lorraine" in Pompapiel. This property was sold and the family moved a mile away. 1911 they repurchased "Lorraine". and continued to farm. Walter Martin was born on 25 August 1915, and died on 07 October 1995. He was raised on the family property of Garibaldi which was opposite the Garibaldi Bridge, and attended the Garibaldi State School until 1930. At the time of Walter Martin's retirement the family property had been in the family for 130 years. He was a keen photographer and combined this passion with a knowledge of the history of Garibaldi and Durham Lead.
