The new Manufacturing Technology Training Centre (MTTC), a part of the proposed Building Construction Training Centre (BCTC), will be a purpose-built, stand-alone, fully fitted-out industry-standard facility. This new space will accommodate current course provision along with specialist training spaces for developing skill requirements in manufacturing technology such as robotics, mechatronics, engineering and industrial automation. Project funding was provided by the Education Investment Fund from the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The project budget is $18.09m, and the resulting building will have a floor space of 4,755m2. The Manufacturing Technology Training Centre is being built in conjunction with the Technical Education Centre (UBTec). While the buildings will have separate street identities the buildings will be joined with shared amenities areas. UBTec will provide a facility including individual learning spaces, learning studios, administration/office space, circulation, open plan learning space, staff common areas, computer rooms, meeting rooms, staff work areas and kitchen areas as well as car parking and site-wide amenities. Cheltenham School Reunion. The third annual "Back to Cheltenham State school" reunion attracted an attendance of 600 former scholars to the school on Saturday afternoon. The proceedings were opened by tho mayor of Moorabbin (Cr. J. W. Allnut). The oldest teacher present was Mrs. Grant, of Sorrento, who, as Miss Fraser, had charge of the school from 1880 to 1883. Another old identity was Mr. T. Evans, of Kew, who is 82 years of age — he was the head teacher from 1802 to 1800. Photographs were taken of Mrs. Grant with fifteen of her former pupils, and of Mr. Evans, who mustered 72 of his old scholars. The roll call showed that there were 50 pupils present who attended tho school more than half a century ago. Mrs. Buckley, of Mentone, who is 84, and Mr. W. P. Fairlam, of Cheltenham, 80 years, were the oldest former scholars in attendance. Mr. Fairlam, notwithstanding his age, still carries on the business of an auctioneer. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Grant and Mrs Buckley by the president of the mothers' club (Mrs. Marshall). An enjoyable day was wound up by a dance at night in the mechanical institute, when 200 attended. This book by C.E. Sayers details the history of the Royal Women's Hospital from the time of its foundation as the Lying In Hospital in 1856.It includes information on doctors and nurses and managerial staff connected with the hospital. Some Warrnambool medical staff in the past have been connected with the Women's Hospital. Apart from its detailing of the history of an important institution in Victoria, this book is of particular interest to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society because William Dixon Saltau (1894-1970), born in Warrnambool, was the Medical Superintendent of the Women’s Hospital from 1924 to 1951. Dr Saltau was the son of Marcus Saltau (M.L.A.) and his wife Jean and the grandson of Henry Saltau who came to Australia in 1860 and who founded in the 1870s the Warrnambool firm of Saltau and Son, general carriers, coal, wood and produce merchants and forwarding agents. Dr Saltau’s father Marcus was Mayor of Warrnambool and a generous benefactor of the Warrnambool Hospital (Marcus Saltau House and Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward). Dr Saltau was educated at Warrnambool Academy (Richard Lawson, Headmaster), Scotch College, Melbourne and Melbourne University. He specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology and practised in England, Adelaide and Melbourne. .This book is of general historical interest as it describes the history of the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and because a Warrnambool identity, Dr William Dixon Saltau, was the Medical Superintendent of this hospital for 25 years. His name is listed in this book. This is a soft-cover book of 170 pages printed in 1976 and giving the history of the first 100 years of the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne. It has a white cover of thick paper with the emblem of the hospital on the front in blue, red, black and white. There is also a dust cover with the same material on it. The book has 26 Chapters and ten Appendices, an Index, a Foreword and an Introduction. It has a black and white sketch of the entrance to the first hospital and portraits of the two medical founders of the hospital. This tin or trunk came from the old Kepler Street, Warrnambol Tait legal offices. The tin originally held legal documents connected to John Hyland (1830-1908). Irish-born John Hyland came to the Warrnambool district in 1850 working as a mounted trooper and a rate collector. He then farmed in the Mortlake district for some years before returning to Warrnambool and setting up as an auctioneer and stock and station agent. He was a Warrnambool Councillor (1880s and 90s) and Mayor (1891-2). His trunk of legal documents was first held by the lawyer, Henry Parrington, operating in Warrnambool from 1888 to 1917 (1888-1900 Higgins and Parrington, 1900 Parrington and Tait, 1901-1917 Parrington). Following Hyland's death in 1908 Henry Parrington has used the tin to house his probate documents and when John Sym Tait purchased the Parrington practice in 1917 he has obviously taken over the Hyland trunk. This crystal ware originally came from the City of Sunshine Mayoral Chambers, located within the former Municipal Offices on Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine. Following the 1995 council mergers that created the City of Brimbank, the new municipality constructed the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on Hampshire Road. During the relocation process, the crystal ware was assessed as no longer required and transferred into storage at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre. It was later deemed surplus and discarded by the Council. The Sunshine & District Historical Society recovered the crystal ware from a waste bin at the Hunt Club Community Centre during a clean‑out.The significance of this crystal ware lies in what it represents a rare surviving piece of City of Sunshine civic regalia, an object tied to mayoral authority, municipal ceremony, and the public identity of a pre‑amalgamation council. Les Payne (1908-1987) arrived in the area in 1924 and was a well known local identity who served on Chelsea Council from 1943 until his retirement in 1979. He was elected Mayor six times (in 1946/47, 53/54, 64/65, 67/68, 69/70, 75/76). Les owned the General Store in Point Nepean Rd (Nepean Hwy) near Kelvin Grove, Chelsea and was a volunteer with the Edithvale Fire Brigade and a prominent member of the Edithvale Methodist Church. In 1935 he married Phyllis (nee Baker). Chelsea was originally part of the Shire of Dandenong, and was severed and incorporated as the Borough of Carrum in May 1920. It was proclaimed the City of Chelsea on 8 May 1929. On 15 December 1994, the City of Chelsea was abolished, and along with the City of Mordialloc and parts of the Cities of Moorabbin, Oakleigh and Springvale, was merged into the newly created City of Kingston. Council meetings were held at Chelsea Town Hall at 316 Station Street, Chelsea. The photographic firm of Morrison & Co., were active at 81 Bourke Street East during the 1880s. Like numerous other photographers in Melbourne, their business must have been severely curtailed by the Depression of the 1890s. The sitter’s identity has been established as a Mrs. Merritt. While we know that she is not the Mrs Merritt who was to be the wife of the future Mayor of Kew, there were two Mrs Merritts who were shopkeepers in High Street, Kew. Mrs Lucy Merritt operated a bootmaker’s shop, and subsequently a “boot warehouse” from 1888 until the 1920s. Miss Laura Merritt established a dressmaker’s shop in High Street in 1910. Charlemont & Co., operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. The sitter’s identity has been established as a Mrs. Merritt. While we know that she is not the Mrs Merritt who was to be the wife of the future Mayor of Kew, there were two Mrs Merritts who were shopkeepers in High Street, Kew. Mrs Lucy Merritt operated a bootmaker’s shop, and subsequently a “boot warehouse” from 1888 until the 1920s. Miss Laura Merritt established a dressmaker’s shop in High Street in 1910. Her business also lasted until the 1920s, albeit changed to that of a bookseller and stationer. Silver albumen cabinet card by Charlemont & Co., who operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. In this portrait of Mrs Merritt, she is posed gazing directly at the lens, thus achieving a potentially more intimate relationship with the viewer. All that is revealed however in this supposedly more direct pose is her face. As with an earlier generation, her hair is centrally parted and flattened to accommodate her bonnet, which is surmounted by feathers. The detail in her coat-dress is sharply revealed by new photographic processes that allowed firms like Charlemont & Co., to capture greater light and shade, as well as the detail of fabrics. The entire garment is beaded with what is probably Parisian jet. The beading is arranged in a ‘paisley’ design. The Bicentennial Travelling Exhibition was launched on 1st January 1988 at Wodonga Racecourse before touring Australia as part of the Australia-wide Bicentennial celebrations. In attendance were Prime Minister Bob Hawke, his wife Hazel, the Mayors of Albury and Wodonga, John Roach and John Macaulay as well as the Director of the Exhibition Mr Desmond Kennard. The Exhibition focused on the concept "Living Together" through different modules based on themes of Journeys, Environment, Together, Identity, Today and Futures. The Travelling Exhibition was hauled by 29 pantechnicons specially designed for the task by Daryl Jackson Pty Ltd of Melbourne. These vehicles also acted as large tent pegs, holding the large display tents in position. The Exhibition in Wodonga ran for five days and was forecast to attract a crowd of 18,000 per day. Two days were required to set the Exhibition up and another two days were needed to dismantle it. The dominating feature of the Exhibition was a 600-seat Bicentennial Theatre. Other displays were set up in each area to reflect the local community. From Wodonga the Exhibition travelled to 34 Australian cities and towns across all States and Territories. It featured a range of displays which travelled the entire journey of more than 30,000 kilometres on land as well as sea travel to Tasmania. Presented by the Honourable Lord Mayor JT Franklin, CMG, MLC, JP, at a parade held at Karrakatta Camp on 7 April 1929. Consecrated by the Chaplain General COL Riley, OBE, VD, DD. With the re-activation of the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) following the Second World War, the 11th/44th Infantry Battalion (The City of Perth Regiment) was raised in 1948 as a linked battalion to carry on the identity and traditions of the pre-war 11th and 44th Battalions respectively. The King's and Regimental Colours formerly held by these two battalions were passed on to the new battalion who paraded them in rotation on ceremonial occasions. Under major reorganisation of the CMF in 1960, all individual infantry battalions that existed at the time within each State were amalgamated to form State regiments, taking effect from 1 July 1960. Thus from that date the 11/44th, 16th and 28th Infantry Battalions were amalgamated to form The Royal Western Australia Regiment. In September 1960, at a ceremonial parade held at Northam Camp, the Colours carried by all former battalions were handed over for safe keeping by the new regiment These former colours were subsequently laid up in the undercroft at the State War Memorial, King's Park on 29 November 1964. These were transferred to the Army Museum of WA in 1988 as part of the Bicentenary Colours Project. Dark green with gold fringe. In the centre the battalion colour patch of a brown over blue rectangle within a circle inscribed "ELEVENTH INFANTRY - PERTH REGIMENT". Beneath the circle a scroll inscribed with the regimental motto "VIGILANS". The whole surrounded with a wreath of Australian wattle and surmounted by the Crown. In the upper canton the Arabic numeral "11". Battle Honours emblazoned on the colour:- SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902, SOMME 1916-18, POZIERES, BULLECOURT, YPRES 1917, MENIN ROAD, HAZEBROUCK, AMIENS, HINDENBURG LINE, LANDING AT ANZAC, DEFENCE OF ANZAC

Minnie Mary Fimmel (1880-1965) was born at Kewell, near Minyip and married carpenter John Thomas Francis Moroney in 1897. His death left her a widow with two children. Minnie re-invented herself as Marie Minnie Dalley and commenced menial work in Melbourne. Known as ‘Ma’, she became a financially successful businesswoman, eventually owning various properties around Victoria including a ‘machinery factory’. She was much ‘talked about’ in the newspapers for her benevolent actions, particularly towards women. For this community service she received an O.B.E. in 1949. Aged 74, she became the first female mayor of Kew. Ma Dalley refused to accept a formal presentation of the honour at a ‘return ball’, insisting that the money be donated to St George’s Hospital, Kew. She continued to financially donate to various charitable organisations. Her piéce de résistance was a staggering £250,000 personal donation to further the building of St George’s Hospital. She died at Kew and is buried at Miniyip Cemetery. Framed large oil painting on canvas. Cr Marie Dalley in her mayoral robes. A carte de visite is a photograph mounted on a piece of card the size of a formal visiting card—hence the name. The format was patented by the French photographer Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819–1889) in 1854. While the identity of the individuals represented in the photographs was known to Annie Wishart, none are identified by name.Leather, ivory and paper photograph album including 18 ‘Cartes de Visit’.
