The 'Collaboration of Commonality and Difference' has its conceptual roots in teh notion that only when we accept and nurture both commonality and difference, can we, humankind, foster unity. With the acceptance and nurturing of commanality and difference, peoples of the world are afforded equal validity for a collaborative approach towards peaceful resolution and possible unity. Integral to the conceptual foundation of the work is the use of papers sourced from around the world. Paper is at once universal and individual, and in this instance is representative of humanking. The jigsaw design draws on the understanding that each piece is integral to the creation and resolution of the whole. Commanality is suggested through repetition, however, no two pieces are the samem emphasizinf the beautym strength and validity of difference. The subject of this photograph, David Charteris McArthur, was the founding manager of the Bank of Australasia in Port Phillip (Melbourne). McArthur was born in 1808 in Gloucester, England, and educated in Scotland. He worked for an insurance firm in Edinburgh, where in 1835 he married Caroline, nee Wright. McArthur and his family party sailed from the U.K. to arrive in Sydney in October 1835, where he joined the Bank of Australasia when it opened in Sydney in December. McArthur sailed to Melbourne in August 1838 with 3000 pounds in coins, protected by armed guards and two bulldogs, to open the Melbourne branch of the Bank of Australasia. The branch grew quickly, servicing both private and government customers. He opened many branches in the goldfields during the 1850s. In 1862, he was appointed as general inspector of branches. He spent time with the bank in New Zealand. On his return to Melbourne, at age 57, he was put in charge of the entire bank. McArthur lived in the hills of Heidelberg, Melbourne. He was the first chairman of Associated Banks and was an advisor to politicians and merchants. He was retired in October 1876 by the London directors and given a free trip to London, an annuity and a seat on the bank’s Advisory Board. McArthur was active in the community, being a member of the Mechanics’ Institute, on the committee that advised Governor Hotham on the Colony’s finances, chairman of the Heidelberg Road Board, one of the original trustees of the Library of Victoria in 1853 and president of the trustees of the Public Library, Museums and National Gallery of Victoria in 1880-83. He was also on many other community organisations. He died in his home “Charterisville” in East Ivanhoe in 1887. He and Caroline had no children. The Melbourne branch of Australia and New Zealand Bank has a portrait of McArthur in its boardroom. St John's Church, Heidelberg, commemorates him with a stained-glass window entitled 'King David'. The McArthur Gallery in the National Gallery of Victoria is also named after him. (David's brother, Donald, moved from Sydney to Melbourne in 1836 with the first government survey team.) ABOUT THE BANK OF AUSTRALASIA In 1836 the Bank of Australasia was established in London by Royal Charter. In 1951 the bank merged with the Union Bank of Australia, to form ANZ Bank Limited. In 1970 it merged with the English, Scottish and Australian Bank to become Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited. Since that time the ANZ has acquired other banks and introduced Internet banking and mobile banking. BANK OF AUSTRALASIA IN WARRNAMBOOL The Bank of Australasia first opened in Warrnambool in July 1854 in a building on Merri Street. The manager was Mr Samuel Hannaford. The bank then purchased and moved to a stone building on the corner of Timor and Gibson Streets, previously owned by Cramond and Dickson and almost opposite the Examiner’s office. In January 1957 Mr W.H. Palmer became the new manager and was there until November 1869. The bank then built its own building on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets in 1859. Mr Basil Spence, the teller, was appointed acting manager in 1869 and Mr H.B. Chomley was the next appointed manager, in April 1873 and was still manager in 1886. The municipality of Warrnambool first banked with the Bank of Australasia from 1856 to April 1857. David Charteris McArthur served as the founding manager of the Bank of Australasia. His leadership marked a significant chapter in Warrnambool's early commercial development. The municipality of Warrnambool relied on the Bank of Australasia as its official bank from 1856 until April 1857. This period is symbolised by a photograph of McArthur, which represents the origins of Warrnambool's commercial history and its early financial infrastructure.Photograph; portrait of David Charteris McArthur. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, were published as part of the newspaper’s ongoing column profiling local traders across the district. These photographs feature owner for the various shops located at the St. East Shopping Centre, Main Road East Corner McArthur Avenue, St. Albans. The Sunshine Advocate’s feature on local traders was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Through these regular profiles, the newspaper promoted local businesses and helped shape Sunshine’s understanding of its developing commercial district. Strip shopping centres hold heritage value as essential components of suburban development from the mid‑20th century onward. They supported migrant settlement, local entrepreneurship, and neighbourhood cohesion, offering affordable retail spaces for family‑run businesses. Their role as informal social hubs fostered community interaction, cultural visibility, and walkable neighbourhoods. Despite economic and demographic change, many strip centres remain resilient landmarks that preserve collective memory and contribute to the identity of Victorian suburbs.7472.01 - Drava Continental Butcher Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Lewis & Emily Hojnik and Tony & Carol Hojnik 7472.02 - Drava Continental Butcher Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Lewis & Emily Hojnik and Tony & Carol Hojnik 7472.03 - Drava Continental Butcher Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Lewis & Emily Hojnik and Tony & Carol Hojnik 7472.04 - Swiss Meats Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Paul & Karoline Berger 7472.05 - Milk Bar Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Albert Sawan 7472.06 - Milk Bar Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Albert Sawanmain road east, mcarthur avenue, st. albans, drava continental butcher shop, swiss meats

An Awl is used to make indentations in wood or other materials in order to ease the insertion of a nail or screw. The blade is placed across the fibers of the wood, cutting them when pressure is applied. The Awl is then twisted through 90 degrees which displaces the fibers creating a hole. This then gives a start to the nail or screw being inserted into the work piece. There is a difference between an Awl and a Bradawl, the Awl is a small hand-held tool with a sharpened point and a Bradawl is similar but is flattened at its tip to produce a sharp chisel edge.An everyday tool used in carpentry, the subject item at this time cannot be associated with an historical event, person or place, provenance is unknown, item assessed as believed to have been produced during the 20th century.Awl with wooden handle with brass ferrule & steel pointed shaftStamped on handle J McArthur (owner)flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, awl, j mcarthur, carpenders tools, woodworking tools, nail starter
