The development of the oropharyngeal airway is one of the lesser-acknowledged advances in anaesthesia. Oral airways made anaesthesia safer and significantly reduced the trauma associated with earlier attempts at managing the obstructed airway. The Hewitt Airway – the first known artificial oral ‘air-way’. In 1890, Frederic Hewitt noted the frequency and danger of upper airway obstruction. In 1908, dissatisfied with the use of tongue forceps and that Esmarch’s maneuver sometimes failed, he described the first oropharyngeal airway, the Hewitt Airway. The tube was less than 8 cm long, ideally connecting the oral opening to the hypopharynx. The Hewitt Airway was the foundation for many subsequent oropharyngeal airway designs. The oropharyngeal airway is significant because of its lesser acknowledged advances in anaesthesia.Round metal tube with a brown rubber tubing sleeve around the outside.medical health, anaesthesia -

Ltd. (now known as Sigma Healthcare) was founded in 1912 by Melbourne Pharmacists Edwin Church and Ernest Leete and has since grown to become one of Australia's leading pharmaceutical retailers. Initially driven by the high prices of wholesale drugs and medicines, Church and Leete established Sigma as a manufacturer of medicinal products which could be sold only to paying subscribers. In 1913, it was decided that Sigma would open its markets to non-member pharmacies and retailers, although WWI caused production to falter. Over the following decade, the company grew, resulting in a restructuring in 1927 and the acquisition of small chemist manufacturing firm, Tromax Co. Ltd., who were struggling financially. For centuries, camphor has been used a folk medicine, likely used as a decongestant as well as a treatment for sprains and inflammation. In the 1900s, camphor was used as an analeptic by injection and was also used to induce seizures in schizophrenic patients in an attempt to cure psychosis. Camphorated oil, as was once present in this bottle, was composed of 20% camphor in cottonseed oil. It was rubbed into the skin as a topical medicine to treat itching from minor skin irritation. In 1947, a competitor's 1 oz. bottle of Camphorated oil was sold at a maximum of 8 dimes. The makers mark indicates that this bottle was manufactured in 1935 by Australian Glass Manufacturers (AGM).This item is an excellent example of a popular household medication used for common ailments such as itching and skin irritation. After moving to Cockatoo in 1954, she quickly realised the shortage of adequate medical care in the area and organised the establishment of the MDCHS. This involved fundraisers and meetings with both locals and council officials to drum up funding and support against opposition who believed there was no need for such a centre. For many years, money was raised for the MDCHS by an opportunity shop nearby until the centre opened on the 3rd of March, 1964. It operated on a membership service, costing £1/5 a year for a single man or woman with no dependents, and a nurse was in attendance 24-hours a day. Alongside the development of the MDCHS, the Berwick Shire council (now part of Cardinia Shire) decided to assign an Infant Welfare Nurse to Cockatoo in order to assist with an influx of new babies in the area. An Infant Welfare Centre was attached to the MDCHS, and opened at the same time. Myrtle joked that she would have the Queen open the building, but it was instead opened by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe. The day was one of great celebration for all in the town. This photograph documents the growth of local healthcare and medicine, as well as one of the many accomplishments of Myrtle Quicke.A black and white photograph of the front of a brick building. The building is enclosed by a low metal fence and two open gates, and sits on an unsealed road. Behind the building are a number of tall trees.
