Races were always a feature at the annual picnic. In those early most families travelled to the picnic ground in hired furniture vans. The annual picnic is still held today in February of each year. The annual picnic gave Ithacans the chance to relax and mingle away from their work on Sunday. The group are standing in a picnic ground in a valley which is surrounded by trees.
