A Fortin style mercury barometer from well-known Australian instrument maker, A.L.Franklin. The column of mercury is supported by the pressure of air on the free surface of the mercury in the cistern at the bottom. Its level can be adjusted to a datum using the screw at the bottom and then the height of the column can be accurately read off using a vernier scale at the top. In the 1860s and 1870s Henry Boyd Mercer selected land between Linton and Skipton at what was then known as Spring Vale, now called Pittong. He was a successful and innovative farmer. Henry Mercer and his wife Deborah, nee Sinclair, had five children, Henry, William, Hugh, Emma and Elizabeth. Deborah Sinclair, a daughter of Jos. Sinclair and his wife Jane (née Cook), married Henry Boyd Mercer in 1859, and they had six children - Jane, Henry, William, Hugh, Emma and Elizabeth. In the 1870s Henry Boyd Mercer purchased farm land at Spring Vale (now Pittong). The property was known as "The Pines". Emma Mercer was born in 1870 and lived at Spring Vale (now Pittong) at the Mercer property "The Pines". Emma worked as a teacher and head teacher at several schools, including Mortchup, Chepstowe, Kiata and Tarilta. In 1916, after she had retired from teaching, she married James Brown, a widower, one of a large farming family at Chepstowe. They had no children. James' brother David was married to Emma's sister Elizabeth (Bessie), and after James Brown died in 1931, Emma moved to live near her sister at Pittong. Emma Brown died in 1954. Emma and her sister Bessie were very involved with the war effort during World War I, and after the war they were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Linton "Diggers". Joseph Fanning - cordial manufacturer, wholesale and retail produce merchant. High Street, Charlton. Views of Charlton was a lithograph made by Rider and Mercer of Ballarat. A number of these were produced for various town. Charlton's was inserted into the local paper for distribution. The lithograph depicted local businesses within Charlton at the time about c.1892. The lithograph is stamped "with WM CURNOW Compliments". William Curnow owned the local store in Charlton at the time.
