These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, formed part of the newspaper's regular coverage of local issues affecting roads, parks, nature strips and other public spaces. Many of the locations featured in these reports were brought to the newspaper's attention by residents concerned about conditions within their neighbourhoods. The images document an infestation of Scotch thistles near a small shopping strip in Metherall Street, Sunshine North. They record a local environmental and amenity issue affecting the area and illustrate the role of community members in drawing attention to matters requiring action by local authorities. The images are also significant as a record of the streetscape surrounding the Metherall Street shopping strip and demonstrate the role of The Advocate in reporting local matters of public interest. As visual records of everyday community issues, they contribute to an understanding of local government responsibilities, community advocacy and neighbourhood life in Sunshine North.6847.01 - Metherall Street Shops Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 488.1).JPG 6847.02 - Metherall Street Shops Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 488.1).JPG 6847.03 - Metherall Street Shops Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 488.1).JPGmetherall street, sunshine north
