Hugh Jeffrey attended the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University, graduating in 1940. This Dux award pin was presented to him during this time, but is undated. It is a gold badge with its frame shaped like a shield, carrying heavy engraving. Inset into the shield is an other smaller shield in copper, with "HJ" in stylised copperplate engraving on the front and "Dux" on the back. These images feature various personnel attending courses and the Middle East Tactical School. This school honed the leadership and command skills of officers. The images are part of the collection of Bill Thomason, a Bendigo collector of militaria. The collection includes two albums put together by a Lieutenant Brown in 1940-41, possibly attached to the 19th Training Battalion at Biet Jirja in Palestine. The albums record events and personalities from units passing through the camp, including many friends of the author in a range of units. The images include those taken by Brown, along with images seemingly supplied by friends from different units. The local photograph shows the original footbridge across the Merri River near its mouth, the Viaduct road and the Warrnambool Breakwater with the Titan crane on it. The breakwater's construction was completed in 1890, the year this photograph was taken. The Viaduct has since been filled in to prevent water passing through the pylons, and the footbridge has been replaced. The photograph was presented to Flagstaff Hill on the centenary of South Warrnambool Primary School, 1877 to 1977, by the school's Warrnambool South Primary School Centenary Committee. The centenary was celebrated during August 12-13-14. The school was decommissioned in the 1990s.The photograph is locally significant for recording the completion of the Warrnambool Breakwater, for showing the original design of the Viaduct and for a clear view of the original footbridge across the Merri River. The Middle Island Maremma Project began in 2006 when there was a sharp decline in the colony size of Little Penguins on Middle Island due to fox predation. Maremma Guardian dogs were trained and placed on Middle Island to protect the penguins from foxes during the breeding season. The children and adults were at a working bee at Bulla Primary School and this group were concentrating on repairing some of the school's playground equipment.
