Gilbert was a Senior Lecturer at the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University) Art Department until his retirement in the late 1970s. In John Gilbert's Mount Helen studio he produced work marked with an incised 'Gilbert'. He had acquired a concern for form and an interest in sculpture from his teacher Neville Bunning, and from the British potter Hans Coper, whom he visited in 1968. He established two potteries in Ballarat , the Edinburgh Pottery (1972-2005) located within the Sovereign Hill precinct, and the Old Ballarat Pottery (1973-1994) located in the Old Ballarat Village opposite Sovereign Hill. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.A large ceramic mural by John Gilbert commissioned for the wall of the E.J. Barker Library. The mural features brown and green glaze with features of indigo. The work has no particular pictorial representation. It is an arrangement of colour and form, designed for enjoyment rather than to analyse. The theme relates to the development of the Universe through basic symbols such as plant forms, fish, birds and to mans development through symbols of science and engineering. The outer edge is symbolic of earths crust being peeled away to reveal science and nature. The mural depicts the changing of seasons from Winter to Summer (left to right). This is a set of four photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment by Miss Victoria on the 19th of April 1986. Her visit was hosted by the CO - LTCOL Don Swiney MBE. Although a list of Miss Victoria former winners is available on-line, the visitor is not identified as it is unclear she was the 1985 or 1986 winner. The University of Melbourne holds an impressive collection of her works. The portrait was unveiled at the school on 2 August 1940. This Memorial Booklet was put together by family, friends and members of the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club for a special memorial service held at the club on Saturday 6th November, 2010. 'China' Gilbert was a popular member of the surf club who passed away from ill health in Torquay on 28th September, 2010. The booklet contains a mixture of tributes, black and white and colour photographs of 'China' from his youth through to modern times highlighting his activities at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club and a pioneer surfer in the 1940's and 1950's.This booklet is significant because it commemorates the memory of one of the oldest and most popular members of the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club. The booklet contains historic and rare photographic images of 'China' from his earliest days as a young surfer through to his time as a competitor for the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club and finally senior club member. 'China' was known around Australia for his surfing, mateship and 'larrikin' streak. Miss Slovenian Community was selected every year at the Slovenian Association Melbourne. Young girls of Slovenian origin participated and collected donations, used for a known charity in Victoria.White satin sash awarded to the Miss Slovenian Community in 1985 Miss Angelique Van De Laak. She was selected among a group of other young ladies, being of one or two Slovenian parents. Angelique was tragically killed in a car accident years later. Miss Eva Carmichael, the subject of the photograph, was one of only two survivors from the wreck of the Loch Ard, wrecked on Mutton Bird Island near Port Campbell, Victoria, on June 1st, 1878..The photograph holds great significance for its connection to Eva Carmichael, one of two survivors from the wreck of the Loch Ard. It is also significant for its connection to the Loch Ard, one of the most tragic shipwrecks in Victoria's coastline and listed on the Historic Shipwreck Register.Photographic portrait mounted on brown cardboard of Miss Eva Carmichael.
