The Mount Helen site was selected for the tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines, known as the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. The Mount Helen Campus held the tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines and was opened to students in 1970. In that year it was known as the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Eduction. The new campus at Mount Helen was part of the Ballarat School of Mines, and was known as Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. The drawing was prepared in the early stages of the Mount Helen campus development, while Stage I buildings ('E', 'F', 'G') were constructed. the Union Building (now Albert Coates Centre), Library, 'S' Building and student accommodation were in the design stage. During a visit to Mount Helen campus a student presented Prince Charles a dandelion for his lapel. The Sun of 29 October 1974 ran the headline 'Some Splendid Girl Gives Charles Flower'. The newspaper reported that Prince Charles did not have the flower when he left a Ballarat Civic Hall reception for a tour of the Institute of Advanced Education at Mt Helen. When asked where he got the flower Prince Charles said 'It was given to me by some splendid girl'. The headwaters of Canadian Creek are located in Mt Helen as a series of springs in the vicinity of Gear Avenue. The dam to the north of Gear Avenue was expanded as part of the development of the Information Technology Centre. Recent works have added a large wetland below the dam. Further dams are located on drainage lines within the University of Ballarat grounds.
