Thomas Barton was one of the earliest settlers in Marysville and with 16 children and numerous descendants, the name of Barton is synonymous with Marysville. Thomas John Barton, along with his business partner, Ewen Hugh Cameron, opened a butcher/abattoirs in Marysville in 1864. This was the first shop in Marysville. They supplied meat and other items to the miners along the Woods Point road. Thomas Barton was an active community member and was a key organiser in setting up the school in Marysville in 1870.
