This calling card / visiting card belonged to Jean Munro, the daughter of Donald Munro who was an Orbost Shire Councillor for 20 years. Donald Munro, with his brother, Archie carried on a boot-making business in one of the rooms of a three-storeyed barn at Lochiel. The Munros were musically inclined and through them a band was formed in 1889. Donald Munro was involved in many of the town's activities. (More in Mary Gilbert's Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District). Jean Munro was for many years a librarian and was involved in the Presbyterian Church in Orbost. She died in 1934.In the early 20th century when formal introductions were a normal expectation of good manners , the exchange of calling cards was a social custom that was essential in developing friendships. This item reflects a time of when courtesy was an important aspect of society. This was presented to Mr A.D. Munro by the residents of Orbost on his retirement as postmaster in 1888. In 1883 the mail terminus was at Newmerella. In July 1883 it was extended to the north side of the river and Archie Munroe became Acting Post Master. He was Post Master until 1885 when the telegraph line came to Orbost.Archie Munro was a well-known Orbost identity who first operated a boot shop in Cameron's barn. He was also active in the promotion of the first brass band in Orbost. He was the son of Hector Munro.A large brown leather portable writing desk. It has a brass handle on the top. This is a set of 35 photographs of a 4th Field Survey Squadron Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants Formal Dinner held at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide SA in 1986. On this occasion WO1 Alex ‘Darby’ Munro and WO1 Geoff Briggs were farewelled. WO1 Munro retired from the Australian Regular Army after 30 years of service. WO1 Geoff Briggs continued his service and retired in 1991. It is apparent there were visiting personnel from the Army Survey Regiment and other unidentified units. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. Mary Munro was the mother of Isabella Munro. They travelled to Australia together aboard the Glen Huntley, although Mary travelled using her maiden name of McKenzie. They arrived in Port Phillip District in 1840. After an arduous crossing, they were required to go into quarantine at Point Ormond on arrival as the ship had several outbreaks of infectious diseases and arrived flying the yellow quarantine flag. She died in 1882 at 'Wattle Grove', Mordialloc. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Munro Engineers were pioneers in farming equipment since 1800s. Their main product was a range of fencing machinery. In 1963 they invented and produced the world's first tractor mounted, hydraulic post driver with digger.
