For security reasons, tokens were used in Australian WW11 Internment Camps. They were introduced in 19433 to replace the paper canteen coupons. This token was used at the internment camp at Bete Bolong just outside Orbost during WW11. This camp was established in 1943 and was there until 1946. The internees had been transferred from the camp at Murchison East to provide farm labour. The coin was given to Lindsay Thomson when he was a student.This token was used at the Bete Bolong POW camp from 1943-1945. This camp housed Italian POWs, some of whom remained/returned after the war to settle in Orbost.An internment camp coin. This is a one penny coin token with a hole in the centre. Document, Lieut Kenneth Frederick Young, Lieutenant Kenneth F. Young, 1992
A thirty page history of Bendigo's Private Kenneth Young subsequently promoted to Lieutenant. Captured and interned in Crete, wounded 1st May 1942, was threatened with amputation, nursed to health by the Sisters of Mercy in a German hospital. Repatriated 1943, granted the authority to wear one gold wound stripe, subsequently employed in AMF Australian Inf at Murchison POW between which a broken fibula and tibia. Finally a stint as Guard of POW, accidentally shot in the leg by a German sentry when lying in bed. A unique service record from the horror of Crete. German National, Walter Kiessling snr. an employee of a German firm was interned in Camp 1, Tatura. His wife remained in Melbourne where there son Walter was born. The father was immediately taken to Melbourne under escort to see his wife and baby son. Subsequently his wife would travel to Murchison by train and ride her bicycle, with the baby in a basket, out to the camp to visit her husband. Later visits were with a friend in their DKW car. Young Walter was christened by a Lutheran Pastor in the camp, under the supervision of Major Schrader, the Garrison Commandant.
