Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures while he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall in compound 13D. The original South Wangaratta Primary School served the district for over 110 years and closed in December 1985 before moving to new premises. When the school closed in 1989 and with the demise of the South Wangaratta Hall due to flooding in the 1990's the Honour Board was wrapped in a blanket and stored in a shed for the best part of 10 years before being donated to the Wangaratta RSL for safekeeping and permanent display These listed men were either born, worked or enlisted at Wangaratta prior to serving their country in the First World War. .1) It is not sure where this photo was taken but it was possibly at the Mollison Street Depot (Passchendaele Barracks) where ex servicemen gathered after the service.The names written on the back were by Jack Barnes who was Secretary of the Bendigo RSL for 43 years. The man on the left is Edward (Teddy) Pearson (born Cleatorn Moor England, enlisted Punchbowl NSW) on 7.11.1939 in 2/1st Bn AIF No NX7784, became a POW, discharged 19.7.1945. Served Korea as No 2400019 in 3RAR 28.9.1950 - 13.12.1950, 1st Aust Reinforcement Holding Unit 13.3.1951 - 19.3.1951, 3RAR 9.5.1951 - 17.9.1951. The man on the right is Stanley Ronald Johns (born Murrayville, enlisted Royal Park) on 17.8.1945, discharged 28.1.1947 at Murchison PW Group. Served Korea as No 3400189 with 3RAR 22.12.1950 - 26.12.1951. Served Vietnam with 1st Topographical Survey Troop 22.5.1966 - 11.12.1966. The man centre blurred is Arnold Junck (born Bendigo, enlisted Bendigo) on14.5.1942 as V246499 in the CMF, transferred to the AIF 6.3.1943 in Wagga Wagga, discharged from the AIF on 9.10.1945. Overseas service is listed as New Guinea 6.7.1943 - 15.7.1945. .2) The man centre with glass of beer is Alan McDonald. Due to the name it is unsure as to identity re Military. The man over his shoulder is Harold Rex Dehne (born bendigo, enlisted in the Field AIF) initially in the CMF as V19558 on 22.9.1941, transfer to the AIF 24.3.1944. Overseas service listed as South West Pacific area 26.4.1943 - 29.5.1945, discharged from the AIF on 9.4.1946 serving with No 5 Aust Army Troops Coy RAE. The short man on McDonalds other side is Bill Jones, once again hard to track down, the man shown briefly on the RH side is Teddy Pearson as in .1). .3) There was no name on the back of this photo which looks like it was taken at the the Anzac Day service Bendigo.
