... murders ...In March 1892, Melbourne Butcher John Stamford took a prospective tenant to a house he owned at 57 Andrew Street Windsor. He noticed a 'disagreeable smell' coming from the front rooms. Suspecting foul play, Stamford called the police who quickly discovered a decomposing body and partially clad body of a young woman in a shallow grave under the fireplace. 'Her skull had been shattered and her throat cut'. Two detectives, Sergeants Considine and Cawsey, began investigations. The previous tenant, a 'Mr. Druin' who had rented the house had since disappeared was the main suspect. 'Druin' had arrived in Australia from England as 'Albert Williams' in December 1891 with his 24 year old wife Emily Mather. The body was Emily's. The crime scene investigation proved difficult as the suspect - whatever his real name- had cleaned up the scene very carefully. Much later it was discovered that the suspect was in fact Frederick Bayley Deeming, a former sailor born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, in 1854. In 1881, Deeming deserted his ship and lived in Sydney where he married and had a family. Deeply in debt, he later burned his business down to claim its insurance value and fled to South Africa before he could be arrested. He is believed to have committed numerous frauds and murders in Africa. Eventually found in Uruguay, he spent time in prison in England for fraud. After being released he married Emily and returned to Australia. After leaving England, British police began investigating him over the murder of Mrs Marie Deeming and her four children. Now using another alias, 'Baron Swanston', Deeming was arrested in Western Australia before he left the country in the company of a young woman, Kate Rounsefell, whom he planned to marry. It seems Kate would have been his next murder victim. Brought back to Victoria, in May 1892, Deeming went on trail for the murder of Emily Mather. Despite a strong defense conducted by a brilliant young barrister and 3 times Australian Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, the evidence against Deeming was overwhelming and he was found guilty. Deeming was hanged at Melbourne Gaol on 23 May 1892. He was known to be responsible for at least 6 murders and may have committed others. Photograph, Black & White 'Edith Cavell Tableau' Easter Parade Cheltenham 1916, 1916
The Friendly Societies Carnival at Mentone 1916 during WW1 was arranged to showcase the local activities and raise funds for the 'Discharged Wounded Soldiers Fund' = £140 was raised. As elsewhere in Australia most of the local young men had enlisted in the AIF and some were coming home wounded - many were killed on overseas battlefields. This Parade was led by the Cheltenham Brass Band, followed by the Friendly Societies AOF, IOR, HACBS, PAFS, and ANA. The PAFS - Protestant Alliance Friendly Society - had 2 entries 'Fruit & Vegetable Display' and 'The Murder of Nurse Edith Cavell' both floats won their category. Ella Allnutt portrayed Nurse Cavell. The Carnival gave prizes for sports events on the Mentone Oval and a concert was held at night at the Mentone Ice Skating Rink. World War 1 1914-1918 had a devastating impact on many early settler families whose sons had volunteered to serve in AIF. 1916 many of these young men were returning injured or had been killed overseas The Community rallied around to support these men and their families by holding fund raising events like the CarnivalBlack & White photograph of a decorated float with a Tableau ' The Murder of Nurse Edith Cavell' in the Friendly Societies Carnival Cheltenham 1916Front Handwritten ; Procession ( part of ) to honour Sister Edith Cavell an English nurse executed by the Germans in Brussels (BELG.) in 1914 (1st World War)cheltenham brass band 1916, ww1 1914-1918, cavell edith, friendly societies, protestant alliance friendly society, moorabbin, cheltenham, dendy henry, dendy's special survey 1841, assisted emigrants early settlers, pioneers, market gardeners, marigold flowers, pharmacy, charman stephen, gettens mary, charman harriet, methodist church, primitive methodists, box william, box elizabeth, state schools, education, moorabbin shire, moorabbin roads board, city of moorabbin, kingston city council -

Document - Witness Recognizance statements for the trial of Robert Jones at Sandhurst, 1858
SANDHURST CIRCUIT COURT. (FROM THE BENDIGO ADVERTISER.) SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13. 1858 Murder Trial. Robert Jones was informed against for the wilful murder by stabbing in the abdomen of George Clark, at Elysian Flat, on the 2nd October, 1858. The prisoner is an old man, upwards of 60 years of age. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. He was undefended. The Crown Prosecutor briefly narrated the chief facts of the case, and called Bridget Martin, restaurant keeper, at Elysian Flat, who deposed that the deceased and the prisoner were at her place on the 2nd October last. They left in the afternoon, between 3 and 4 o'clock. The prisoner had had some drink, but was not far gone; he was capable of taking care of himself. She saw nothing more of them until they brought the prisoner back in custody, and the deceased on a stretcher. They appeared to be on very good terms together. By the prisoner.—The deceased wanted to persuade prisoner to go away with him against the will of the latter. Alexander Lovell deposed to having left the last witness's house in company with the deceased and prisoner, about 2 o'clock. The deceased was sober ; prisoner was rather the worse of drink, but not to say drunk. They appeared to be on the best of terms. A. J. Clarke, miner.—On the 2nd October, about half-past five o'clock, he was washing at his dam, when he heard awful cries, and about 140 yards from him he saw prisoner and deceased together. The deceased was stooping with his hand on his left side. He saw the prisoner with his hand uplifted and heard him say something to deceased. The deceased then picked up his swag and came towards witness. The prisoner went away. When witness's mates brought prisoner back to where deceased was, they asked prisoner if he knew deceased. He said, "Yes." The deceased said, " Oh, Bob, you have killed me." The prisoner replied, " Why did you aggravate me to it ?" The prisoner was not sober nor what might be termed drunk. John Rattray, a runner to the Mercury deposed that on the afternoon in question he saw the occurrence described by last witness. He saw the two men, the one apparently in pursuit of the other. The deceased was stooping down, with his hands on his belly. Shortly afterwards the deceased came up and showed them the wound on his left side. Witness then went in search of the police; but there were none at Elysian Flat. Witthe assistance of some diggers, the prisoner was secured. He heard the expressions referred to by last witness. James Taylor, a miner at Elysian Flat. The jury, after retiring for about 20 minutes, returned into Court with a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy, as the prisoner was an old man, and had com- mitted the crime in the heat of the moment. His Honor, in passing sentence on the prisoner, said he would forward the recommendation of the jury to the Executive, but he could hold out no such hope. After praying him to make good use of his time in this world, his Honor passed sentence of death in the usual manner. The prisoner, who appeared little affected during the address of his Honor, at its conclusion put on his hat and walked out of the Court, in the charge of a constable, apparently cool and collected. Witness Recognizance statements at Sandhurst re the stabbing murder of George Clark by Robert Jones. Extracts from the late Jean Hill from the Criminal Trial Briefs. Evidence given in the Sandhurst court in October and November 1858. Details of each of nine witnesses. Photocopied documents.history, bendigo, murder, george hillier bryant, sandhurst -
