... MV New Australia...a framed oil painting of the migrant ship MV New Australia... New Australia Migrant ships New Australia a framed oil painting of the migrant ship MV New Australia Painting New Australia Dacre Smyth ...SS New Australia was a UK-built turbo-electric passenger steamship that had a varied career from 1931 to 1966. She was built as the ocean liner Monarch of Bermuda, was a troop ship in the Second World War and was damaged by fire in 1947. She was then refitted to carry emigrants to Australia and renamed New Australia. In 1958 she was refitted again, renamed Arkadia and served as both a transatlantic liner and a cruise ship. The ship originally had three funnels. Thornycroft rebuilt her with a single funnel, plus an unusual bipod structure aft of her bridge that served as both a funnel and a mainmast. The MoT renamed her New Australia, contracted Shaw, Savill & Albion Line to manage her and put her into service carrying UK emigrants to Australia. She plied this trade from 1950 until 1957. In September 1958 New Australia was serving as a troop ship again when she suffered slight damage in a collision with a tanker in the Torres Strait.a framed oil painting of the migrant ship MV New AustraliaNew Australiamv new australia, migrant ships -

On the 27th November 1983, there were parties throughout Australia to celebrate the winning of The Americas Cup yacht race, Melbourne was no exception and Graham and several colleagues went ashore to join in. ...Graham was born in 1962 in Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up in the south side of Glasgow and became an active member of the Boys Brigade, progressing through the different sections to eventually gain the organisation's highest award, the Queens Badge. During these years Graham became a proficient bugler and trumpeter, taking part in many nationwide competitions as part of the company band. After completion of his school education, Graham was accepted as an apprentice engineering officer by the Scottish Ship Management who ran a fleet of bulk carriers. After training at the Glasgow Nautical College he then went to sea, firstly on the MV Baron Napier and subsequently the MV Baron Kinnaird, the ship he was on when he travelled to Australia. On the 27th November 1983, there were parties throughout Australia to celebrate the winning of The Americas Cup yacht race, Melbourne was no exception and Graham and several colleagues went ashore to join in. During the celebrations, Graham climbed up some scaffolding to get a better view but a girder became disloged and he fell to the ground and was struck by the falling girder. He died shortly after despite the best efforts of the ambulance crews. Graham's body was returned home to Glasgow and a cremation service took place in the Linn Crematorium near where he lived and grew up. Money was donated by the ship's crew and officer and sent to the Mission (Reverend Chin) to purchase an engraved plaque in his memory. The plaque was mounted on a bench used as coffee table. In January 2025, Alain, his former girlfriend visited the Mission to view the plaque. The Mission is a place of memorial for seafarers.Rectangular brass plaque, on top 3 logos: Merchant Navy, Merchant Navy crown and flag of the SSM (Scottish Ship Management)Engraved: In Memory of / Graham Stewart Martin / Engineer Cadet / MV Baron Kinnaird / 27th September 1983graham stewart martin, engineer cadet, m.v. baron kinnaird, scottish ship management, ssm, 1983, america's cup, bench -

When the old Melbourne wharves and their moorings were still in use, chaplains would also visit ships to look after the welfare of those who could not visit the Mission. Today, the Mission’s ‘Ship Visitors’ provide a similar service. The Flinders Street central complex was purpose built to meet with seafarers’ needs: “...the first thing a sailor would see before the traps and temptations of the city would be the Institute and its comfortable rooms.” (The Argus, ND). Today, the Mission continues to offer its comfortable, safe spaces and a friendly ear to seafarers, alongside other services that extend well beyond those traditionally offered - including TV, phone cards, and access to the internet. This window, titled ‘Light of the World’, was installed in 1935 in memory of a former ‘M.V. Manunda’ captain and represents chaplaincy support to the seafaring community.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. ... Australian Navy Oberon-class submarine HMAS Otama. This vessel was stationed outside the heads in the 50s and 60s waiting for vessels needing a pilot on board. It seemed to be a permanant fixture to many onlookers in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. MV ...The ship was built in 1953 by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow, Scotland for the Port Phillip Sea Pilots organisation as a pilot cutter. Her role as a pilot cutter was to sail with pilots on board to meet ships entering Port Phillip Bay. Pilots would be transferred by the Wyuna's workboat to the vessel requiring pilotage while it was stopped dead in the water, with shelter provided by the vessel itself. In the early 1970s the pilot service started using fast launches to allow pilots to board while ships were still underway, and in 1979 the Wyuna was sold to the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania as a training vessel. She continued in that role until 2004 when sold to Mineralogy Pty Ltd as an accommodation vessel. In September 2013 she was donated to the Western Port Oberon Association for the Victorian Maritime Centre currently at Crib Point. For a time she was docked at Beauty Point, Tasmania, and after being refurbished for 18 months she was to be moved to Docklands in Melbourne, Victoria. After this berth became unavailable the vessel was docked at Inspection Head Wharf in Beauty Point. After a period there it was towed into Bell Bay where she lays at anchor as of January 2016. When funding becomes available the Western Port Oberon Association has plans to display the vessel in a wet berth alongside the former Royal Australian Navy Oberon-class submarine HMAS Otama.Mr Henry HudsonBlack and white photograph of the Pilot Tender MV Wyuna partially obscured by a large wave at the rip, entrance to Port Phillip Bay.mv wyuna, port phillip pilot service, the rip, the heads, queenscliff, point lonsdale -
