He was a pioneer of the Sunday School movement. Schools were organised on Sundays as most children worked 6 days a week in factories, mines etc. Initially the Sunday Schools were only for boys. The first Sunday School was established in Melbourne in 1838-39 and in Bendigo in 1855.Bendigo Advertiser '' The way we were'' from 2002.
