The blazer was worn by Speros Defteros in 1948 Olympic Games in London and the Melbourne games in 1956. He was able to compete in the Greek wrestling team at both games because he was considered a Greek national although he was naturalised as an Australian. The IPS raised funds through an appeal to send Speros Defteros to the Olympic Games in London.A coloured photograph of a dark blue Olympic blazer hanging on a wooden coat hanger.

A copy of Dimitri (known as James) Sofianos' Commonwealth of Australia Naturalisation Certificate issued from Sydney on 22 June 1928. Australian citizenship offered significant rights and was therefore taken up by many Ithacan migrants once they became established and when they fulfilled the requirements which at the time of Dimitri's naturalization were more onerous for those who were not 'natural born' British subjects. Prior to 1949, Australian naturalisation meant citizens became British subjects. It was not until 26 January 1949 the status of Australian citizen was created when the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 came into force. And it was not until the 1973 under the Whitlam Labor government that the distinction between migrants from Commonwealth and other countries in terms of ability to become Australian citizens was abolished. The previous residence requirements of 1 year (Commonwealth migrants) and 5 years (non-Commonwealth migrants) to become Australian citizens was replaced by a common residence period of 3 years, but with a six-month transition period.A scanned copy on A4 paper of a certificate of Naturalization.migration

In 1947 Shire President Cr. Charles F. Pollard called a public meeting for the purpose of discussing the forming of an Agricultural Society to raise funds for the proposed Wodonga Hospital. Cr. Pollard was the inaugural President of the Wodonga Show Society and was joined by seven past Shire Presidents as part of an original 25 member Wodonga Show Society committee. In addition to the committee, there were 150 members of the inaugural Society. The first Wodonga Show was held on Saturday 6 March 1948. The first Sun-News Pictorial Miss Show Girl competition was held in Victoria in 1957, an annual tradition that lasted into the 1990s. Most country shows held heats to find a local winner before the final was judged at the Royal Melbourne Show each year. The first Miss Wodonga Show Girl competition was held in 1958. It was open to all girls between the ages of 16 and 23, born in Australia or naturalised Australians. Judging will be on the following basis of deportment, dress sense, grooming, general appearance, personality. Wodonga Show Society presented a prize to the winner who was accompanied to the final judging on People’s Day at the Melbourne Royal Show. This sash was awarded to Miss Wodonga Show Girl in 1966. The winner of the Senior Section was Ludmilla Bartosz of Wodonga. The Junior Show Girl section was won by Sue Maddison of Bandiana. First prize in the Senior section included this sash, $20 in case and a first class return rail fare to Melbourne for the final judging at the Royal Melbourne Show.A blue sash with gold trim and lettering and a fringe trim.WODONGA SHOW 1966 MISS WODONGA SHOW GIRL SASH DONATED BY PENNANT PRODUCTS MELB.wodonga agricultural society, wodonga show, miss wodonga show girl

This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. Merry-Go-Rounds or Carousels were a popular entertainment accompanying many celebrations and events in Albury and Wodonga from as early as the mid 1870s. They featured at events such as Empire Day and Arbor Day celebrations as well as the Wodonga Racing Club meetings, Wodonga Agricultural Shows and Victory Day celebrations at the end of World War 11. They were operated by a variety of travelling showmen and entrepreneurs. Early merry-go-rounds were steam powered. The merry-go-round in this negative was owned by Anton Weniger of Melbourne. From 1909, Mr Weniger operated a shooting gallery and Steam Riding Gallery on the Lower Esplanade, St. Kilda on land he had leased in 1909 from the St. Kilda Foreshore Trust. Weniger also took his carousels by train to many rural areas, including several visits to Albury, Yarrawonga and Benalla. His largest carousel was designed and built in Melbourne by Herbert Thomson in 1915. It has now been restored and has been on show as the Civic Carousel in Canberra, ACT since 1974. Anton Weniger’s steam merry-go-round was definitely in the Albury- Wodonga area in September 1912. As reported in the Border Morning Mail on Saturday 2 November 1912, Mr. Weniger was the victim of a robbery which included some money and his gold watch and chain, stolen from a railway truck in the Wodonga railway yards. The riding gallery and other belongings had been placed on the truck in Albury after the Albury show and sent on to Wodonga in transit to Wangaratta. Whilst in the Wodonga yards the truck was broken into and the goods stolen. Two of Weniger’s former employees, Herbert Backhouse and Edmund Pressard were subsequently charged with the robbery and sentenced to respective sentences of 3 and 9 months imprisonment, both with hard labour. In January 1916, Weniger’s Steam Riding Gallery was attacked by a group of rioting soldiers as a result of rising anti-German sentiment with the onset of World War 1. As a result, Anton Weniger terminated his interest and lease of the Steam Riding Gallery to his partner, William George Kelly. Although he had lived in Victoria for over 25 years and had been a naturalised Australian for 20 years, Anton Weniger was interned for the duration of World War 1 as an enemy alien. Anton Johannes Matthias Weniger died on 14 August 1923 and is buried in the Brighton General Cemetery, Melbourne, Victoria. This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.Digital image created from the Haeusler Glass negative collection. Bernhard Gerstle & his family (parents & siblings) were German nationals working in Tehran, Iran upon the outbreak of World War II. In 1941, after the installation of a pro-British ruler to the Persian throne, all German nationals were targeted as threats to national security. The women and children evacuated to Stuttgart, Germany via Turkey, while the men were handed over to British forces. Bernhard was taken by ship (the SS Rona) to Bombay & then to Australia (on the SS Rangitiki). He was then marched in to Loveday internment camp 10, South Australia. In January 1945 the German & Italian internees at Loveday were transferred to Tatura Camp 1. Bernhard remained there until after the war & his eventual release, on 29th August 1946. Bernhard chose & was granted permission to remain in Australia post-war, as did many civilian internees, after their examination by a Committee of Inquiry which investigated their political leanings & other criteria for their supposed suitability as Australian residents. The biography also recounts his employment post-war, marriage in 1952 & his later naturalisation as an Australian citizen. Other material includes Gerstle family history from the perspective of Bernhard's sister & family, who remained in Stuttgart; background on the Gerstle family's Russian origins; and a biography of Oskar Speck, famous kayaker, amongst other things, who was interned along with Bernhard & who became good friends with the family; a brief historical background of the Allied forces/Persia invasion; and extracts of Tatura Camp 3 internee Helga Griffin's book, "Sing Me That Lovely Song Again".
