Prior to subdivision for housing this area was paddocks used for grazing of cattle and used as part of the course in the early days of the Surrey Hills Golf Club. Surrey Hills Golf Club operated from 1892-1908 then moved and became Riversdale Golf Club. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags! Always immaculately groomed councillor Kaele Way was a keen advocate for woman in local government. in 2005 she was elected to the Springfield ward. In 2007 she was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll for Women. She was one of only 20 at the time. In 2008 she co-authored a handbook for women for wishing to run for office. In2008 she became chair of the Australian Local Government Womens Association. In 2009 she became deputy chair of the Victorian Regional Development Association. She was also deputy chair man of the Victorian Regional Development for the Eastern Metropolitan area. In 2009 she was presented with an AM for her work for women in local government. The carpark is in Barkly Street, behind the O'Shanassy Shopping strip. In the 1940s-1950s, a former textile factory occupied the site. The factory was housed in an ex-army hut and many of Sunbury's women were employed there. From 1946 - 48, the business was known as Angee Clothing, which produced gloves, slippers and dressing gowns. In 1949, the site was taken over by Yakka, where work clothes were made. One of a series of postcards celebrating the launch of 'Flora for Victoria 1996', a project to celebrate the Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne`s 150th anniversary and the centenary of the death of its first director Baron Ferdinand von Mueller (1825 -1896). St Vincent Gardens is of national significance for its English style. Designed by Clement Hodgkinson in 1868 the garden reflects the Georgian era. Image description: Tree plantings are arranged in symmetrical patterns with themed plantings throughout the gardens timescale, four of which are registered with the National Trust. Message to residents on two of the postcards reads: "Dear Resident. NATURE STRIPS MOWING: The nature strips are a vital part of the streetscapes and the assistance you provide by maintaining the grassed nature strip is appreciated. This is one of a number of cottages that were in Horne Street, Sunbury and have been demolished to make way for commercial development. It was built at no.30 at the corner of Horne and Cornish Streets some time in the 1930s. Originally it was a house for railway employees working at Sunbury. In later years it was a private house. It was demolished in the early 2010s. The cottage in the photograph was situated at 13 Evans Street in Sunbury and was one of the last houses to be demolished along the business precinct of Evans Street between Brook and Macedon Streets. The cream brick building on the RHS of the house is a Telstra complex. The cottage was demolished in the early 2000s and a fast-food outlet now occupies the site. Date is that given by descendant Julia Thornton. William Ernest Palstra married May Aurunui Holdaway (1885-1964) in 1920; this was their first and only home. They had 3 children, Margaret, Jocelyn and William. The family were connected with the Canterbury Salvation Army Corps. William's father was a Salvation Army officer; he spent his early life in South Africa. Prior to marriage he lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. He was an air force officer. He joined the RAAF in 1925. The family was in London when William was killed on the maiden flight of the Airship R101 to Karachi. It crashed near Beauvais in France. His widow and children returned to live at 60 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills. The donor Margaret Thornton was a daughter of William and May Palstra; one of her daughters, Julia Thornton still lives in the house in 2023. The houses across the road were demolished in the 1970s to build the Surrey Hills Salvation Army Church.This home is one of very few in the area which has been continuously owned by the same family over 3 generations.
