This novel is about Bertie Cecil, a dashing but cash-strapped officer in the First Life Guards. Threatened with a forgery charge, he flees to the French Foreign Legion under the alias Louis Victor. He fakes his death to protect his brother and a lady's honour, then serves in Algeria's desert campaigns. He is saved from execution by Cigarette, a camp follower who loves him despite her dislike of the English. He is also loved by the widowed Princess Corona. The novel is a melodramatic romance of honour, exile and sacrifice, set between the English aristocracy and French Algeria.
