David Lanyon undertook many aspects of mining progressing to become the underground boss of the New Chum United Mine. In 1894 he became a member of the Bendigo Stock exchange and a successful speculator. He then moved into a new home, "Raelwa" in Beech St., GoldenSquare. This substantial home was designed by architect, Mr William Beebe10563.3a David & Augusta Lanyon outside their (Miner's Cottage) home in Ophir Street, Bendigo. 'Among the earliest of the stacks built at Bendigo in connexion with Quartz crushing plant, are the two figured in this Annual report No 1 was situate in Sailor's Gully but was demolished about three years ago. This, if not the first, must have been one of the first built, for it had a stone inserted on which chiselled the date 1854. It was built altogether of rough masonry. The other, No. 2, is still standing at the Sheepshead line and was apparently of later date, the upper portion being of brick. They are intersting landmarks of an era that is rapidly passing.' The Williams United Shaft (New Chum Reef) is a significant historical gold mining site in Eaglehawk, a suburb of Bendigo, Victoria. Located at the end of Junction Street, this heritage-listed site contains remnants of mining infrastructure, including a poppet head, compressor beds, and a winder bed, amidst old open-cut workings and mullock heaps. The mine was part of the rich Bendigo goldfield and is recognized on the Victorian Heritage Inventory. Albert Richardson was a President of the Bendigo Historical Society. He had a great interest in the history of the Bendigo goldfield. A reserve in Marong Road, adjoining Victoria Hill mine precint, is named in honor of Albert and his contribution to recording the history of Bendigo. New Chum Gully is one of the earliest and most important alluvial and quartz mining gully of Bendigo goldfields. It was also one of the more lucrative reefs and became the site of extensive quartz reef mining with some of the richest mines of the field, led by George Lansell and Daniel Barnet Lazarus. These included the nearby mine sites of New Chum and Victoria, New Chum United, Old Chum, Lansells 222 and Lazarus as well as operating extensive battery buildings and pyrites works that were all located in New Chum Gully between Booth, Thistle Streets and Maple Street. Three page document hand written by Albert Richardson, on the history of Victoria Hill, Ironbark. 'one of the richest areas on Bendigo field. In the first six years, £1,200,000 worth of gold was obtained. Almost every claim returned a fortune.' Page three title: Other features on Victoria Hill. 'Adjacent to Central Nell Gwynne area as the mining museum. Adjacent to the New Chum Hill on direct south side of the Calder Highway. This hill reached by a short and excellent access road gives a magnificent view of Bendigo and Golden Square, and a very good view of another tourist attraction, Lansells 'Fortuna' now Survey Regiment's headquarters. This hill is the centre of another rich area. The Lazarus mine 3,360 feet deep with 24 saddle reefs in 2,200 feet. The New Chum United, Lansell's 222with its 120 ft high poppet legs. Document.Copy of Williamstown Historical Society Newsletter No 17 (1977).On the second and third page of this Newsletter is an article entitled ''The guns of the 'Nelson''', written by Doug Mills, Castlemaine. The Warship NELSON underwent alterations in 1860, including cut down to two decks and lengthened, her armaments reduced to 72 guns. Two 7inch 68 pounder guns were added to her armament. In February 7 1867 she was officially given to the Colony of Victoria by the Imperial Government. At the time her Commander was Captain Charles B. Payne. The Warship reached Melbourne in 4th February 1868. Relics of the NELSON were auctioned at Williamstown Victoria Naval Depot, and her two anchors are preserved for public display at Williamstown. An active demand for a share of the guns from various towns in the State. Ballarat received four (4) guns, Bendigo and Castlemaine two (2) each, while one has been given to each of the following towns: - Ararat, Tarnagulla, Hamilton, Bacchus Marsh, Echuca and Geelong.
