This business card advertised the business of Charles Hider who had a stationery and book shop in Liebig Street from the 1860s to the 1880s. (63 Liebig Street today). He also sold photographs and pictures, picture frames, pianos and other musical instruments and homeopathic medicines and was an agent for local newspapers and overseas magazines. The stamp on one side of the card shows Liebig Street spelled ‘Liebeg’, suggesting that the stamp was perhaps made in the 1860s when ‘Liebeg’ was the common spelling of the street name. Charles Hider’s brother James also had a book and stationery store in Warrnambool in Timor Street in the 19th century. This card is of considerable interest as it belonged to Charles Hider, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 19th century. It also shows the type of business card used in the 19th century.This is a small business card from Charles Hider, a 19th century Warrnambool bookseller and stationer. The Hollywood film stars pasted on to one side of this paper are of no historical interest to our Society. The four paper items attached to the other side relate to the pioneer aviator, Basil Watson. He flew the first aeroplane to come to Warrnambool in January 1917. Watson flew from Point Cook to Warrnambool in one hour 55 minutes, an Australian cross-country flying record at the time. He had built his own aeroplane which was 18 feet long with a wing span of 26 feet and it had a 7 cylinder 50 H.P. rotary Gnome engine. In Warrnambool he amazed the crowds with his dare-devil aerial acrobatics, looping the loop 14 times over the Warrnambool Racecourse. Watson also brought several letters with him, making him the bearer of the first aerial mail to Warrnambool. Sadly Basil Watson died when his plane crashed at Point Cook in March 1917, just two months after his record-breaking flight to Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has in its collection the small galvanized bucket seat which came from Watson’s plane and the original first air letter written by the Mayor of Melbourne to the Mayor of Warrnambool. These four items are of considerable historical interest as they are souvenirs issued at the time of Basil Watson’s aviation exploits in the early 1900s and Watson is of great importance in the aviation history of Warrnambool.This is a piece of paper (possibly from a scrapbook) with one torn edge. Alexander Robinson was born on the 19th March 1862 and lived on the family farm, Woody Park at Aitkins Gully Warrnambool. At 18 he moved into Warrnambool and began his coach building and automotive career with Fred Morse who was one of Warrnambool's earliest coachbuilders. The business which was situated in Fairy Street was later taken over by Callaghan Motors who operated from the same site until 2017. He married Miss Lydia Humm and they had five children. He was active in community affairs and was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1907-1909. He died in September 1932. This album has photographs dating from 1907 up to 1913 and show a variety of early motor vehicles, workers and machinery. Individual photos have names of owners some of which include John j Winter, June 1912,Dr J H Henderson August 1911, D Ronaldson Ballarat 1912, Edward Owen 1913 martin Brennan 1914. The sections inside the workshop show the engineering department, Body Making, painting and smith's shop. There are also a number of Vulcan cars for which they were agents. This is the Weekly Times Annual of 1929. The Weekly Times newspaper was established in 1869 and was taken over by the Herald Newspaper group in 1892. It is a paper dedicated to rural affairs and is now the oldest rural newspaper in Australia. It has long been known as the ‘Bible of the Bush’. This ledger contains original Warrnambool Standard newspaper cuttings of the eleven articles written by Henri Worland on the early history of Warrnambool. The subject matter includes the Post and Telegraph Office, Punts over the Merri and Hopkins Rivers, Transport in the Early Days, Early Exploration, Minjah Station and the History of the Breakwater. Henri Worland (1883-1972) was Warrnambool’s most important 20th century local historian. He was the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949 and his intense interest in Warrnambool’s history led him to collect and preserve a great amount of local history material. He wrote extensively on Warrnambool’s history and gave talks on the local radio station over a period of many years.These newspaper cuttings are of interest as examples of the many local history articles written by the important Warrnambool historian Henri Worland. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has a collection of Worland’s original writings in his own handwriting. This is a ledger book with a brown-coloured cover with red binding. There is a label pasted on to the front cover with black printing on it. The ledger has indented alphabet tabs and the pages are ruled with red lines for ledger purposes but these have not been used. The ledger has been used to paste in original cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper (Henri Worland articles from the 1940s). One page contains two copies of old photographs.
