The Kew Advertiser was a major local Kew newspaper founded in 1926. It was owned by William David Vaughan who was a prominent member of the Kew community. This later became the nerve centre for publication of four other local newspapers: The Hawthorn Standard (1932), the Eastern Suburbs Advertiser (1934), the Coburg Courier (1935) and the Brunswick Sentinel (1936). The last two were later sold to another publisher, and the remaining three merged in 1959 to form the Eastern Suburbs Standard. This, in turn, continued under that name until 1974, when it merged with a counterpart from Doncaster, the Whitehorse Standard, and then carried on (under various names) until 1980." The exact dates in which the Kew Floral, Industrial and Arts Society flourished is unclear. We do know however that it was part of a more widespread series of competitions involving 'juveniles' from church Sunday schools in the 1880s and 1890s. The newspaper article which is part of this collection of documents, while undated, states that the exhibition grew out of the activities of the Congregational Church Sunday School in Walpole Street, Kew (Vic)The items in the Amy Grigg collection, including awards, items of appliqué and embroideries etc reveal much about the artistic and social activities in a suburb like Kew in the late 1880s.Five certificates awarded to Amy Grigg of Pakington Street Kew in competition for prizes awarded by the Society. The certificates are stored in the 'Kew Floral, Indutrial & Art Society' archive file with other items relating to Amy Watson (née Grigg) the mother of Joy Ivory. Dight’s Falls in Studley Park is an artificial weir built on a natural rock bar across the Yarra. The weir was built in the 1840s to provide water to the ‘Ceres’ flour-mill, one of the first in Victoria. The falls were later to become known as Dight’s Falls after the owners of the mill. Later, a pumping station was built on the Kew side of the river, which pumped water uphill to a reservoir in Walmer Street that provided water to the Melbourne Botanical Gardens and to Albert Park Lake.
