Tram 31 was built in 1917 by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide. First owner was Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board, (MMTB) It came to Ballarat in 1935. When trams stopped running in 1971, it was purchased by Perth Electric Tramway Museum, Western Australia. This photograph shows Tram 31 at night. It was the very last tram to exit Victoria Street on 22 August 1971. Photograph - night flash - shows tram 42 crossing the Lydiard St level crossing with a large crowd on board. Tram has the destination of depot. Given the tram number and the crowd, most likely the last tram from Lydiard St North to the depot. Tram 42 was recorded as the last to leave Lydiard St North on 19/9/1971. This night-time photograph shows a side on view of an unnumbered W1 class tramcar covered with hundreds of light globes, including on the raised trolley pole. Much of the drop centre is blocked by a large drop sheet that is also lit and painted with flags. Numerous clusters of flags are placed along the sides of the saloons. Behind the tram is the administration office block at South Melbourne Depot. As tram drivers understand, driving such an illuminated tram that draws so much power from the overhead would not be an easy task. The Duke and Duchess of York visited Australia in 1927 to open the new Parliament House in Canberra. They also visited Melbourne in April that year. They became the King and Queen of Australia in 1936. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Rare photograph of the demolition of the Zig-Zag Bridge linking the two asylums on either side of the Yarra River.Digital copy of a photograph from page 16 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. The Zig-Zag Bridge linked the grounds of the Yarra Bend and Kew Asylums. The wooden bridge was constructed in the 1870s and lasted through numerous floods until its destruction in 1929. A horizontal structure, the walkway was reached via a wooden staircase on the Kew bank of the river. The steps were required due to the different levels of the banks on this stretch of the river.
